What an AWEsome turn out for
2019 Schools Clean Up Day!

For immediate Release: Schools Clean Up Day, Friday 1 March 2019

Participating in Clean Up Schools and Clean Up Youth Days are an AWEsome way for young people to learn about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in their community.

Across the nation over 528,000 young Australians gloved up today from 2,243 pre-schools and primary schools with another 1,193 high schools and youth groups working today or over the weekend to clean up. This is a 2.5% increase over the record breaking 2018 results.

According to Clean Up Australia’s Managing Director, it is a fantastic result and shows how much fun picking up rubbish can be when you are under 12, becoming a more conscious effort once you hit the beach, local park, bushland or waterway as a teenager.

“The kids of Australia, led by their teachers and youth leaders, are showing us all that they really care. Their efforts across the country are raising awareness and developing leadership skills as our youth takes up the challenge of creating a more sustainable and waste efficient future,” said Terrie-Ann.

Launched in 2019, Clean Up’s Youth Ambassador program showcases initiatives of the next generation of enthusiastic and creative problem solvers. They are inspiring their friends, motivating local communities and challenging others to pitch in to make a difference.

Every young volunteer across schools and youth Clean Up sites is AWEsome.

A wareness – their eyes have been opened to the scale of rubbish that is harming our wildlife;
W ell-being – their reward is a better understanding of how keeping the environment healthy is part of leading a healthy life;
E mpowerment – They are now empowered to continue to take positive action to make their schools, club houses, sporting grounds and outdoor spaces the cleanest places they can be.

“Change starts with you is more than just a theme. Over half a million kids are living it.”
