OLDER PEOPLE DRIVING THEIR CLINICAL CARE

In Australia, over a million older people are receiving some form of support to enable them to stay in their own homes , yet very few of them have the confidence to actively participate in clinical decisions that directly affect them. Lorraine Poulos and Associates is proud to announce our new publication A practical handbook for basic clinical care tasks in the home that demystifies clinical care by giving older people and their carers the knowledge and power to take control of clinical care decisions.

Professor Lynn Chenoweth said “Not only does the book provide evidence-based information and advice on clinical and care requirements for older persons with chronic health issues and disabilities, it clearly advises on use of reablement and rehabilitation techniques by caregivers to support the person’s vitality, wellness, health and quality of life”.

Lorraine said at the book launch: “Older people and their carers often lack the right kind of information and the confidence to be involved in clinical care decisions. This can be a real barrier to living the life they want to live”.

Lorraine explained that her, and co-author Catherine Brown, were prompted to write the book because they wanted to give power back to older people and their carers to actively manage and participate in the decisions regarding clinical care. “Almost all the literature available is targeted towards health professionals. This book puts the key information into the hands older people and their carers, giving them exactly what they need to know about the 18 most common clinical care and daily care tasks”.

In an easy-to-follow format, it enables users including older people to recognise and report when their condition changes. This is important as often early indicators of changes are not always evident. This book gives an older person clear information to self-report changes enabling these to be managed.

The highly qualified authors of this book have a combined experience of over 65 years in the aged sector. Lorraine Poulos is a Gerontologist, Registered Nurse and an experienced health executive. Co-author Catherine Brown is a Nurse Practitioner and specialist in Psychogeriatrics & Cognition, with clinical, training and management experience in working with older people across all sectors.

The books would make an ideal Christmas gift for an older person living in the community or for a family carer who would like to provide more informed support to an older person.

The books are available for $15 per copy through www.lorrainepoulos.com.au
