Organiser of Melbourne’s recent Peace March launches body image campaign

Friday, 05 October 2012 11:20

Â

**** Motivating issues: ****
– Sexual repression contributes to sexual abuse
– Alarming increase in labiaplasty
– Taboos hinder public discourse, hindering resolution

**** The project aims to: ****
– Ease body image taboos and shame
– Celebrate our bodies and our diversity
– Raise money for women’s charities

**** Inspired by The Vagina Monologues ****
-Supports V-Day foundation, One Billion Rising, White Ribbon, etc.

Philip Werner, organiser of Melbourne’s recent Peace March, has launched a Pozible crowd-funding campaign to support the publication of a taboo smashing coffee table photo book.

The book, simply called 101 Vagina, aims to break the taboos and shame around our bodies in general and around vaginas in particular. It will contain 101 black and white photos and a message from or about each woman’s vagina to the world.

“This book is to be a celebration of our bodies, our sensuality and sexuality.

“As a society we have such an unhealthy relationship with out bodies. Sexuality is deeply repressed and so many people carry shame about their body.”

“I also believe that sexual repression is causally related to sexual abuse and enables advertisers to manipulate us into buying and doing things we don’t need; the alarming increase in labiaplasty being a glaring example.”

By tackling these taboos, the project aims to allow a more open dialogue and help us all to feel better about our bodies in general, starting with the greatest taboo, the vagina. The 101 Penis book is also in the making.

“Taboos prevent us from talking openly about things, hindering our efforts to tackle associated issues. In this case those issues include genital mutilation, body image, sexual health, sexual abuse, fertility, sexual dysfunction, etc. My hope is that this book will ease that taboo a little, allow more open conversation, release people from their shame and thus help heal this great social wound.’

Five dollars from the sale of every book will go to various women’s charities to support them in their important work.

“I was first inspired by Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues so I wanted to give back to the causes she has highlighted.”

This includes supporting the V-Day foundation and OneBillionRising campaign that are working to end violence against women and girls. And there are many local charities and women’s groups that the project would like to direct funds to. Philip has contacted V-Day to request permission to host a V-Day or V-Men event.

“There is so much that we can all do to contribute to a more peaceful, less violent world. Join the White Ribbon and One Billion Rising campaigns, host a V-Day event, start your own peace group, etc. etc.”

Philip strongly believes that that sexual repression and violence are causally related and that easing this repression will benefit all of us.

“People who are comfortable in their sexuality have fewer pent up tensions and can therefore be more peaceful and loving in their lives. Rape, harassment and molestation are NOT expressions of sexual freedom, they are expressions of sexual repression.”

Among all the shame and taboo we must not forget that sex should be about pleasure and joy. There is a beautiful and growing ‘sex positive’ movement happening internationally. It still goes largely under the radar, though video bloggers like Lacy Green are gaining popularity.

“Some dear friends of mine are trailblazers in the field of sexual education and exploration. Vanessa runs Sex Camp, Eyal and Emma run Tantra Is Love, and many other friends are counselors, healers and therapists. There is so much good work being done.”

This Pozible crowd-funding campaign runs for just under three months, expiring just before the new year. It needs to raise $20,000 for the first large print run of the book to keep the cost per book down. That’s 400 people at $50 a book. People can pledge any amount from $1 upwards, and if pledging $50 (plus postage) or more they will actually receive a copy of the book once it’s printed. Then it’s effectively a pre-order or the book, rather than just a donation.

“The book itself will be really big and beautiful. Hardcover, over 200 pages of photos and text and around 30cm square. Having that on your coffee table will be impossible to ignore.”

“The great thing with this Pozible campaign is that everybody wins. The project wins because it will enable the book to get printed, the supporters win because they will actually get the book as a reward, and various charities will win from the funds raised. Besides, once it hits retail stores it will more likely sell for around $70, so supporters are even getting a discount.”

The 101 Vagina Pozible campaign page includes a video explaining the project and talking about vaginas.

The main 101 Vagina website includes a blog section where many women have shared candid stories related to their vaginas that span the emotional gamut from raw to funny, from joyful to sad.

Visit the websites to see what it is all about and make your pledge to support the project!

Animal behaviourist helps owners with Pets Behaving Badly

Monday, 08 October 2012 11:10
Melbourne based animal behaviourist, Kate Mornement, helps pet owners with feisty felines, disobedient dogs and belligerent birds through her consulting business (appropriately named) Pets Behaving Badly. “The most common behaviour problems I see are separation anxiety in dogs, inappropriate toileting in cats and aggression in pet parrots.”

Behaviour problems can be complex and many pet owners feel helpless because they don’t know how to resolve the issue or they don’t realise that professional help is available. “Most behaviour problems can be modified, it’s just a matter of helping pet owners understand the science of behaviour and what motivates animals to behave in particular ways.” Some behaviour problems can become quite severe, causing stress to owners and resulting in a breakdown of the human-animal bond. “Teaching people how to get the best behaviour from their furry (or feathered) friend is so rewarding.”

Kate has a Bachelor of Science, with first class honours in zoology, and has almost completed a PhD, in canine behaviour, at Monash University. She regularly travels overseas to gain practical experience training a variety of animals. “Recently I’ve travelled to the USA for workshops with world famous bird and marine mammal trainers. I trained several macaws, an African raven, trumpeter hornbill and an Amazon parrot. It was incredible!”

Besides consulting, Kate also holds animal behaviour and training seminars and workshops for pet owners and people who work professionally with animals. “My passion is educating people how to effectively and humanely train their animals using science-based methods and promoting human-animal relationships based on trust and mutual respect.” For more information visit: www.petsbehavingbadly.com.au

New 13mm Compact Laminate Colours in stock – Surface Squared

Tuesday, 16 October 2012 14:38

Compact Laminate is a versatile, high performance material. Its solid laminated core comprises multiple layers of resin-impregnated quality kraft papers with, generally, a decorative surface on both sides. This impressively strong and damage-resistant homogeneous laminate has excellent strength.

Because of its inherent structural solidity and thickness, Compact Laminate is self-supporting for most vertical applications. For horizontal applications the optimum thickness will depend on the distance between supports.

The material can be cut, shaped and routered to produce the stylish shapes and forms demanded by contemporary design. The distinctive black edge of standard grade may be cut square or bevelled and polished, giving an all-round finish with a striking design feature.

Compact Laminate is the most practical material for special areas, particularly wet and high traffic environments such as toilet cubicles, change rooms, playgrounds and hospitals. Compact Laminate sheet has a high resistance to impact, scratching, fire, water and humidity due to its high density.

Surface Squared also stocks chemical resistant and antibacterial grades of Compact Laminate.

About Antibacterial Compact Laminate

Surface Squared Safeguard Plus Anti-Bacterial Compact Laminate retards the growth of nearly 99% of common forms of bacteria on any decorative surface. Safeguard Plus is produced by permanently incorporating a US-EPA approved, well known and widely used anti-microbial agent during the manufacturing process. The anti-microbial agent used for manufacturing these compact laminate sheets is also a common ingredient in many cosmetics and oral hygiene products in everyday use.

Ideally suited to kitchens, hospitals, kindergartens, laboratories and public transport Safeguard Plus Compact Laminate ensures maximum available protection bacteria. Common Bacteria eradicated when you use Safeguard Plus in your Interiors includes Staphylococcus Aureus, Streptococcus Faecalis, Escherichia Coli and Klebisella Pneumonia.

About Chemical Resistant Compact Laminate

Surface Squared Labguardian is a chemical resistant Compact Laminate designed specifically to shield surfaces from chemical abuse. Resistant to harsh chemicals, acids, bases, solvents as well as harsh cleaning agents, Labguardian is a durable and cost effective substitute to epoxy, slate and stainless steel.

Manufactured using the unique patented Electron Beam Curing (EBC) Acylic Resins, Surface Squared Labguardian is the perfect choice for laboratories. The EBC process not only makes the laminate high resistant to most chemicals but also makes the laminate non pourous hence stopping bacterial growth on the surface, also making Labguardian an anti-bacterial product.

Free Mining Course to be won in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane

Wednesday, 17 October 2012 14:16
Underground Training Systems is happy to announce our new competition to win a place on one of our next mining courses. With the help of the good people at the Jobs in mining facebook page we are offering 1 free place in our next 4 courses to be held in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. All people have to do to enter is to go to the Jobs in Mining page and post why they want to become a Hardrock Underground Miner. The people at Jobs in Mining will choose the winner for each city and the first one is happening in Melbourne this weekend 19-21 October.

The course is in Hardrock underground mining and was written by a panel of Ticketed WA Shift Supervisors to offer the general public a chance to learn the skills required to become a Hardrock underground miner. This is an area of the mining industry that is still hiring new starters as old mines are bought back on line. The Australian Mines and Metals Association estimates job vacancies in the resources sector could surge to 15,000 vacancies within the next year and most people planning to capitalise on the skills shortage can’t successfully make the transition because they don’t have the basic knowledge of how a mine actually works. Familiarisation is the key and basic pre-employment training teaching you about the mine is a good way to boost work-readiness and attractiveness to prospective employers in the Hardrock Underground Mining Industry.

Case study: Former Gold Coast Builder, 45 year Old, Neil Bell has made the transition into the mining industry due to a dwindling commercial climate, after more than 20 years in the construction industry.

“I had a building and roofing company working on the Gold Coast and throughout the Brisbane area. I employed 20 people, but things really tightened up. It was getting harder to get contracts and money was getting really tight.

“I really wanted to move into the mining industry so I made the decision do some mining specific training to give me the best chance of getting a job.” He says

Neil made the transition into the industry following the completion of the Introduction to Underground Mining Course, which gave him the knowledge to get in front of potential employers. He began work at the end of 2011 as a truck driver with mining contractor Barminco, at Mt Isa in Queensland.

“I stared on $98,000 driving a truck, but moved to $110,000 pretty quickly and I expect that I will be moving to around $130,000 by the end of 2012 as I progress in the hierarchy.

“I have a five year plan to become a shift boss, which is a senior role. That would generally attract up to $180,000 a year – but I know guys who are working internationally as shift bosses who will start on $400,000. So there are massive opportunities out there in Hardrock Underground Mining – but you need to be prepared.” Said Neil

Stellar Aussie cast and crew come together for ‘Time’.

Thursday, 18 October 2012 11:44
Award winning new filmaker Liam Connor to Direct with Cinematographer Brad Francis and ‘Sea Patrols’ Julie Forster; alongside Lucas Thyer from Pixel Frame to produce.

Is time travel possible? That is the question that underlies the film ‘Time’. ‘Time’ is a poignant short film about one young boys exploration into the eternal, yet foolish idea that time travel might be possible. The lead, a 12 year old named James, takes us on a journey of ignorance to knowledge; pushing boundaries whilst dealing with the normality and abnormality of growing up with an eccentric Mum.

This is a tremendous script that offers us the opportunity to create a beautiful and imaginative story whilst showcasing some of Australia’s finest talent. Alix Bidstrup (All Saints) will star as James’ (Nic Hamilton, Mako Mermaids) dysfunctional yet enigmatic mother, whilst Julie Forster (Sea Patrol), Lisa Michell (The Reef), Vanessa Loh (X’) and Charlotte Cutting (The Pram) are just part of a dynamic and talented crew.

‘My vision is simple.’ says writer Liam Connor. ‘To tell a story that I’ve put to people my entire life; people laugh about the idea of time travel and the ‘rules’ and paradoxes which come with it but I believe it will always be a concept worth exploring through storytelling’

‘It’s not everyday that you are given such a beautiful script together with the comment ‘let’s make this with no money’ says cinematographer Brad Francis. ‘Time is presented in a beautiful way that is poetic yet real, complicated yet so simple, engaging and imaginative. It has inspired everyone that has read it’

Filming of ‘Time’ begins this Saturday 20th of October in South East Queensland. ‘Time’ is in desperate need of immediate donations to help ensure we can turn this into the magical story that it truly is. All cast and crew are donating their time and skills to help tell this thought provoking and romantic tale. Pledges can be made at: http://www.pozible.com/index.php/archive/index/10477/description/0/0

How YouTube Is The New Tool In This Plumbers Tool Belt…

Wednesday, 24 October 2012 10:34
In an Australian first, Darryl and Tanya Simon, owners of PlumbAssist are leading the pack and innovating an industry that has a reputation for tardiness and bumcrack.

YouTube videos are now directly linking clients to this innovative Melbourne plumbing company and providing them with access to cost saving and potentially life saving “How To” and “Hot Tip” videos.

Tanya, co-owner of PlumbAssist, says “the plumbing industry is still rife with the reputation being held up by the image of Billy Bumcrack. As a female in the co-driver seat I feel passionate about providing our customers with the best possible experience. Considering 63% of our calls come directly from a female, we put a strong focus on delivering excellence and happiness which sets us apart”.

Tanya says “YouTube is providing a wonderful medium for Darryl and I to connect, as an entrepreneurial couple running our family business, with our customers. We have partnered with Reece plumbing as our major supplier so we have access to film in their showroom. We are the first in Australia to be doing this.”

Tanya continues to say “Our goal is to provide everyone with information about how we can save them money and the headache of having a cowboy turn up on their doorstep. My hope is that this raises standards in the industry. We have had a lot of fun doing this too. There are some hilarious outtakes”

Families and businesses all over Australia are spending millions of dollars every year in emergency plumbing call outs and repairs. Plumbing emergencies can cause major damage to homes and businesses. These plumbing emergencies cause major damage to treasured belongings in the home and can potentially bring a business to its knees. In some cases this can also lead to lengthy, time consuming insurance claims which can cause major headaches for home and business owners.

Christmas is just around the corner, and the onslaught of cowboy plumbers around the country taking advantage of the “silly season” begins. Darryl and Tanya aim to educate the general public about avoiding making these biggest mistakes when choosing a plumber and what they can do in the case of a plumbing emergency. Armed with the right information, families and businesses can literally save thousands of dollars, the headache of lengthy insurance claims and the heartache of loosing treasured belongings. Especially when families are already financially stretched at Christmas time.

Darryl says “Its during the Christmas holiday period that its almost like the wild west out there. I’ve been around long enough to see what goes on not only during the holiday period but also during the year. My aim together with Tanya is to bring some innovation and respect to an industry that has a reputation for tardiness and bumcrack. Our videos light-heartedly educate home and business owners about preventing plumbing emergencies and how to choose a reputable plumber”.

Darryl and Tanya cover topics such as “Where to Locate Your Main Water Meter” “How To Turn Off Your Main Water Meter In The Event of an Emergency“ and “How To Avoid Making The Biggest Mistakes When Choosing a Plumber”.

Choose Australia’s Most Sustainable Canned Tuna

Wednesday, 24 October 2012 14:43
Melbourne – First Ray are jumping for joy as their Fish 4 Ever Skipjack Tuna in Brine is once again rated as Australia’s # 1 choice in Greenpeace’s 4th Canned Tuna Guide.

Fish 4 Ever has once again taken top honours in the Greenpeace Canned Tuna Guide, being recognised as the “best example of fair and environmentally sound sourcing of tuna”. Fish 4 Ever have also been acknowledged as the “pioneer” of sustainable fishing in Australia and as setting the benchmark for sustainable fishing practices.

Sandy Abram, Co-Founder of First Ray, a wholly owned Australian company and the distributors of Fish 4 Ever in Australia is ecstatic. “Sustainable fishing has always been a part of Fish 4 Ever from the very beginning and what we as a company believe in. This is our third year at the top of the Greenpeace Canned Tuna ranking which really cements our position as Australia’s best choice for canned tuna and our long term commitment to sustainable fishing practices.”

The Greenpeace Canned Tuna guide assesses brands on a range of factors such as fishing methods, labelling and equitable trade for the fishing communities and whilst most major companies are trying to play catch up and to be seen as doing the right thing, Fish 4 Ever has always lead the way.

Fish 4 Ever’s Skipjack Tuna in Brine is caught by hand using a pole and line in the pristine waters of the Azores. This is the most sustainable way of fishing as it ensures no harm is made to the marine environment or to other precious marine life such as turtles, sea birds or dolphins. Unlike most tuna brands, Fish 4 Ever is processed in the same area and local fishing communities are paid a premium for their products guaranteeing fair and equitable trade.
