Most digital radios sold to date have been standalone portable radios. While there are a few DAB+ tuners on the market, all have other features, such as media streaming and Internet Radio, which many people either do not want or do not want to pay for – ranging in price from $499-$2,500.
As a result, out of the hundreds of thousands of Hi-Fi systems in Australian homes, only a small number now access digital radio; and most HiFi systems available in stores today, a year after the launch of DAB+ radio, still do not have DAB+ tuners built in. An inexpensive upgrade is now available that plugs straight into a standard auxiliary input (the same way you would plug in a CD player) and will upgrade any HiFi system to DAB+* digital radio for just $175 RRP (* where signal is available). The new DAB+ tuner, from Plum Audio, is a small appliance that can be placed on a table top or bookshelf: this means, for example, that the song title and artist information can be easily viewed. The Plum Audio DAB+ tuner has a two line screen which displays the station name on the first line and a user definable information second line which can display information sent by the radio station such as; the song title & artist, program information, news, sport, weather & traffic information. The Plum Audio DAB+ tuner comes with a remote control which manages all functions including volume (which is handy since many older amplifiers do not have remote controls). It has a RRP of $175 and is covered by a 1 year warranty. The Plum Audio digital tuner will be available from June 2010 and will be sold through Hi-Fi retailers.
