PRESS RELEASE: AN AUSSIE BREW FOR TWO? SHARE NERADA’S COMMUNI-TEA PACK WITH A NEIGHBOUR AND SUPPORT AUSSIE-GROWN TOO

Sharing a cup of tea with a friend or neighbour has long been a ritual that keeps communities together. Through challenging times, the act of making tea has long been a way of providing comfort. With social distancing in place, this might not be possible, but you can still let someone know you’re thinking of them by sending them a pack of Aussie-grown Nerada Tea. Queensland-based Nerada is giving away 150 Communi-tea boxes in a bid to keep people connected even though they are apart. There’s never been a more important time to let someone know you care, and you’ll be supporting Australian-grown products like Nerada too.

One silver-lining of the current situation is that there has been a groundswell in support for Australian-made products*, as well as random acts of kindness between friends and neighbours. To some tea lovers it might be news that tea grows in Australia, but Nerada will be celebrating 50 years of black tea production next year and is responsible for 85% of all tea grown in Australia. Its pesticide-free tea estate is the largest in Australia (360 hectares), situated on the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns, Queensland, and is certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

Plantation Director, Tony Poyner explains, “It’s music to our ears that Australians are seeking out Australian-grown products in this time of economic uncertainty. The good news is that our yields are excellent this year and we have tea in abundance to keep the nation stocked up with their favourite brew at home.” He added, “Customers who haven’t tried our tea before will be rewarded with the freshest cup of tea they’ve tasted. Unlike tea sourced from overseas, our tea’s journey from crop to cup can take as little as 28 days. It travels from here to Brisbane to be packed, before heading out to the supermarkets and grocery stores.”

To be in with a chance of winning a Communi-tea box head to neradatea.com.au/communitea. The box will include two packs of Australian-grown black tea and two limited-edition biscuits – one for you, one for your neighbour.

Nerada Tea is available at all major supermarkets, selected independent grocery stores and online at neradatea.com.au. RRP: 50 teabags Australian-grown black tea – $2.50.

Tony Poyner, Plantation Director is available for interview.

NOTES:

About Nerada Tea:
Nerada Tea has been at the forefront of tea production within Australia since the 1960s. The Nerada Tea estate is the largest in Australia situated on the Atherton Tablelands near Cairns, Queensland. Our black tea is grown pesticide-free on a single-origin, 360-hectare estate (more than 3 million bushes grow on our Glen Allyn estate alone).

Nerada delivers a minimum of 6 million kilos of fresh tea leaves to its Malanda processing facility each year, which results in approximately 1.5 million kilograms of black tea or almost 750 million cups of tea a year.

That’s around 9,000 cups of tea an hour! It is then transported directly to the Brisbane packaging factory, fresh Australian grown tea which can go from crop to cup within 28 days.

In 2018 Nerada Tea received Rainforest Alliance Certification for the pesticide-free black tea, the first and only Australian agricultural entity to be awarded such certification.

Nerada produces a range of pesticide-free black tea which is available in loose leaf format, tagged tea bags, cup or pot bags. Nerada also offers a popular range of organic tea and herbal infusion products including Peppermint, Camomile, Lemon and Ginger, Green Tea, Chai, Hibiscus and Lemongrass, Rooibos and Vanilla and Rosehip, Lemongrass and Ginger.

The Russell family are proud owners of Nerada Tea, establishing the company in 1984. They are third-generation global tea producers, with British, Malaysian and Australian heritage. The family also own BOH Tea in Malaysia and have been involved in the tea industry since 1927.

Tony Poyner, Plantation Director has been at the Tea Estate in Malanda, FNQ for 30 years, his wife Bev Poyner runs the tea room and local sales & marketing, whilst one of their sons is a trained tea maker at Nerada. It’s a true family business.

Nerada employs 85 people and works closely with other Queensland businesses to support the local economy.
