Australian Breakdancers Being Flown to Challenge Taiwan’s Best Crews
An Australian breaking crew is being sent to compete against Taiwan in a battle to the finish
This breaking crew will have the opportunity to represent Australia and compete against international level opponents from around the world
The chosen crew is determined by a national elimination qualifier
Sydney, NSW – a local crew of dancers will be sent to represent Australia in a showdown battle against Taiwan. The representing crew will be chosen by a dance battle qualifier being held by Krosswerdz Community Programs on July 20 in Camperdown, and will have the opportunity to battle on an international stage being produced by OUR City B-boys.
“OUR City Bboys is a rival city battle league that focuses on organising full-length competitive Breaking battles. Our mission is to create a Breaking battle industry where the top B-boys and B-girls from every city can battle professionally.” says Dyzee, the OUR City B-boys Commissioner and world leader in Breaking. “We bring the most exciting and raw battles through a mix of dance, art, culture, and competition in a concert atmosphere. It is the dream of every Breaker to not only proudly represent their crew, but also their country and origins. OUR City B-boys will give the Australian Breakers a chance to represent and fight against some of the best in Taiwan.”
Despite the high level of skill in Australia, it is difficult to see Australians represented on an international level in Breaking. However, Breaking made its first ever appearance in the Youth Olympics Games in October 2018, including young Sydneysider, Jericho Lim, who passed the qualifiers to represent in Buenos Aires. Now, more of the Australian Breaking community are getting ready to step up and earn their recognition.
Jericho Lim from Western Sydney, passed the qualifiers in Japan and Taiwan to earn Australia a spot in the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. However, due to the restriction on the number of athletes each country can send, he was not permitted to compete. Jericho will be joining us at the OUR City B-boy qualifier for a chance to represent internationally again.
Breaking battles are on the cusp of reaching unprecedented recognition with its official inclusion in the Paris Olympics 2024. Many dancers in the Breaking community are excited for the upcoming opportunities to compete for Australia.
The Australian representatives will be chosen at the qualifier and sent to Taiwan in September 2019.
This qualifier, titled OUR Aussie Bboys, is held on July 20 at C3 Church Central City in Camperdown and is open to all ages to enter or watch. Admission for spectators is free and doors open at 3pm to finish at 5pm. Sponsorship/partnership opportunities are available.
