PRESS RELEASE: Light Soy, the Soy Fish Lamp, Wins Good Design Award Gold

Sydney design studio Heliograf is pleased to announce that Light Soy, the glass lamp shaped like the iconic soy sauce ‘fish’ packet, has received a prestigious Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Product Design Furniture and Lighting category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.

Light Soy was created by designers Angus Ware and Jeffrey Simpson as a statement on the disposable nature of the soy packets, and designed to be treasured, rather than trashed.

They were inspired to create the lamps after eating sushi and realising how much disposable plastic they had used. Like straws, coffee cups and plastic bags, billions of the little fish packets are used every year, and they can’t be re-used or recycled.

Ware & Simpson both grew up by the ocean, and thought it was a cruel irony that a plastic fish would harm marine life, and even potentially contaminate our food with microplastics.

They set out to produce a high quality, playful lamp that highlights the big issues with single-use plastic, and acts as a positive reminder for individuals and designers to make better choices for the planet.

Heliograf collaborated with industrial designers Vert Design to create a high quality design with a low impact. Light Soy is made from premium materials chosen for durability, sustainability and recyclability, like glass and aluminium, and the packaging is completely plastic-free and biodegradable.

As a member of 1% For the Planet, the studio contributes one percent of revenue to ocean cleanups and nonprofits protecting marine life.

The annual Good Design Awards is Australia’s oldest and most prestigious international Awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. The Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, design strategy, social impact design and young designers.

More than 55 Good Design Awards Jurors evaluated each entry according to a strict set of design criteria which covers ‘good design’, ‘design innovation’ and ‘design impact’. Projects recognised with a GoodDesign Award must demonstrate excellence in good design and convince the Jury they are worthy of recognition at this level.

The Good Design Awards Jury praised Light Soy, commenting: “A nice, playful product which will be a commercial success. Sense of humour about the design which is appreciated as well as thoughtful use of materials and adaptability of design. Cool social commentary and art.”

Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said: “Receiving a Good Design Award is a significant achievement given the very high calibre and record number of entries received in 2020.”

“There’s no doubt it has been a really tough year for everyone so it’s nice to be able to share some good news for a change. The projects represented in this year’s Good Design Awards shine a positive light on our creative and innovative capacity as human beings. These inspirational winning projects give me hope and optimism that our design community will continue to innovate, no matter how challenging the world around us is,” said Dr. Gien.

“Australia’s Good Design Award is more than a symbol of design excellence – it represents the hard work and dedication towards an innovative outcome that will ultimately make our lives better. These projects showcase the sheer brilliance of design and the potential it has to improve our world,” said Dr. Gien.
