‘Mother is She’ is the first solo show for artist Marisa Ho. Working in the medium of photography, Ho employs a mix of Still Life, Portraiture and Performative Photography, to take her audience through a personal journey in search of her identity in Motherhood.

For Marisa, this work arrived during a period of creative anxiety brought on by the demands of raising her three busy children;
‘Motherhood and Creativity are all encompassing gifts. Yet at times it seems they can only function in mutual exclusivity. Very often I feel it is my Creativity and Identity that is forced to a backseat, -not worthy of precedence over the constant and ever-changing demands of raising three children. But it was this internal conflict, that unexpectedly brought me to this work.’

For Marisa, it is with some trepidation that she brings this work to the public. Commentary of Motherhood can be fraught with judgment and debate, and Motherhood as a subject of art can be still easily be dismissed as bourgeois. But there are no cliché’s in this body of work.

‘This is a deeply personal self-portrait of my Motherhood. It explores the overwhelming nature of Motherhood, the fragmented state of mind, and my frustration at the limitations motherhood has placed on me. But as well as this, this series is an expression of my feeling of loss of identity, and the sense of disquiet with the new identity that has been re-assigned to me. This work captures the entangled mix of love, suffocation, connection, isolation, the loss of identity, and the general madness of my Motherhood.

Beautiful, sad, witty and lonely, Mother is She tells an honest story of one woman’s Motherhood
