Dion and his team at dion seminara architecture are pleased to announce that their recent project located in Sherwood, Queensland has achieved a Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) rating of 8.7. A 6-star rating is the typical standard for all new homes, however, with the right planning and execution, Dion’s team has successfully surpassed that, putting the home in elite company with some of Australia’s most sustainable homes.

The shift towards creating sustainable homes is an important trend which has only come about in the last few decades. Needless to say, the team has completely embraced this concept by integrating it into their designs and creating three main benefits for clients:
– Economical – In comparison to houses with a 6-star rating, homes with 8 or 9-star ratings
use approximately 80% less energy to cool or heat their homes, and only one tenth of
the average energy usage of existing homes.
– Environmental – Perhaps the most important is creating sustainable elements in the
home which are environmentally friendly and adaptive to local conditions.
– Social – The team designs homes to match the client’s lifestyle; with the intention of creating a space which supports flow, comfort and security.

The Sherwood home incorporated several sustainable principles which assisted in achieving an attractive NatHERS score. The layout of the home was precisely designed to maximise natural light and airflow within the daytime. This paired with purposeful choices of external materials aiding in keeping the home cool in the summer and insulated in the winter.

Other sustainable design elements such as an internal division system, double glazed windows and photovoltaic panels were also used.
