PRESS RELEASE: Why Russian Cossacks Are Evoking The Image Of Australia’s 7th Prime Minister

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – 10TH JUNE 2021 – This Saturday 12th of June, Sydney’s Russian community will be celebrating ‘Russia Day’ at Centennial Park adjacent to the Crimean Cannons. The day marks Russia’s youngest holiday celebrating the establishment of independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union with proceedings to commence from 12noon. All media and interested parties are welcome to attend.

This years event holds additional significance and has attracted the attention from Russian news media abroad after president of the Australian Cossack Society Simeon Boikov unearthed previously unknown documents from the National Archives of Australia dating back to the first world war and relate to the then Prime Minister William ‘Billy’ Hughes request to the facilitate the return of the Crimean cannons currently located in different localities in Australia.

In series of telegram messages between the Prime Minister’s Office, the Governor-General and Secretary of State for the Colonies, Prime Minister Billy Hughes directed the facilitation of the cannons via Vladivostok which never eventuated. The discovery of the documents has led to Cossack groups in Russia holding images of Australia’s 7th Prime Minister Billy Hughes, organising press conferences with local media and calling for the return of the cannons with local Cossacks in Australia heeding their call. Australia’s Russian community have also successfully submitted an official petitions to the House of Representatives calling for the return of the cannons.
