PRESS RELEASE: WA’s brightest young scientific minds compete in RACI’s National Titration Competition WA finals at UWA

Eleven secondary schools representing some of WA’s top young scientific minds and potential future chemical scientists will come together at the University of Western Australia on Thursday 19 August to see who is the national RACI Titration Competition winner.

What: RACI Titration Competition – Western Australia Finals
Where: University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Hwy Crawley
When: Thursday 19 August 19: 4.30 – 8.00pm

Interview opportunities with teachers and students will be available on the day of the competition, making it a great opportunity for a positive Chemistry and STEM education story. Photographs will also be made available to the media for those unable to attend the event.

This annual Chemistry competition is conducted by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), the professional voice of Chemistry in Australia. Teams of three students are set the task of performing a Chemistry experiment called Titration – two sets of acid-base titrations are conducted in order to determine the unknown concentration of a weak acid in a solution that is supplied to them. Teams are ranked on how close they get to the actual concentration for each acid.

Held throughout Australia, the RACI’s Titration Competition is designed to encourage secondary students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side, to develop their scientific skills and understanding. It provides students an opportunity to experience conducting an experiment in a laboratory environment at their school or local university in their state and the chance to see who is Australia’s top Titration team.

Australia’s overall winning team will be awarded based on the best result from all of the state finalists. The WA Titration Competition is the only state event able to be run at a university this year, making it unique in this COVID impacted year.

Ends.
