PRESS RELEASE: Remembering the Three P’s to Potty Training

AUSTRALIA: Bringing home a new puppy can be challenging, and most new pet parents will desire impeccable house manners from their new addition. But how can you efficiently train your puppy to potty in the right place– and fast? We have the answer! Keep the three P’s of training in mind, Patience, Praise, and Persistence, and your training should be smooth sailing!

“Being patient with your puppy will go a long way to ensure your potty training takes weeks, not months,” comments PetSafe® Australia’s Zarqa Ali. “Praising them at the right time and being persistent and consistent can also help to play a huge role in ensuring that potty training is a positive experience for both of you!”

So, how do you kick off your training?

Firstly, designate one area that will be your puppy’s potty area. Ideally, select a location near the door that leads to the outdoor area you ultimately want your puppy to utilise. Place your chosen puppy toilet product in this area and ensure that this ‘spot’ is used for nothing else but toilet time (i.e., don’t play or feed them near it).

Investing in products like portable pet toilets or special pee-pods can also be far more effective and cleaner than using old newspapers, for example.

Next, keep your puppy on a rigorous and consistent toilet schedule. The best times to place them on their toilet area are just as they wake up from sleep after eating, before and after playtime, and right before bedtime.

Ensure that you reward your puppy with praise and pats (not treats!) every time they use the toilet area correctly, but do not punish them if they slip up. If your puppy does make doo doo in the wrong location, refrain from getting over-excited by yelling or getting upset. Patiently pick them up and place them on their puppy toilet area immediately.

Once your puppy starts to successfully utilise their designated toilet area, slowly move it outside, a little more day by day, until it is in the site you want them to use and remove it altogether.

Don’t expect too much of your new puppy too soon. It can take several weeks to several months before perfecting their potty training. This timeframe depends on the breed, the age, and the trainer’s ability to maintain the three P’s!

Products mentioned in this release:

Pet Loo® Portable Pet Toilet (RRP$171.99)
It’s your backyard in a box! Whether you live in an apartment, you’re potty training a new puppy, or you clean up a lot after your aging pet, the Pet Loo® Pet Toilet makes it easy to care for your furry family members. An eco-friendly alternative to pee pads, this pet potty is useful indoors or outdoors, and works for dogs, cats and other small pets. The top layer of synthetic grass allows urine to drain into the base. The reinforced base is slightly angled so liquid empties into the waste container. The 2-liter waste container catches urine and is easy to remove for quick cleanup.

Pet Loo® Pee-PodTM Urine Disposal Kit (RRP$40.89)
Say goodbye to messy liquid when you clean up after your pets! The Pee-Pod™ is a disposable tray that fits neatly inside the Pet Loo® Pet Toilet and holds up to 2 liters of liquid waste.
