The newest work from author Brittany Smith combines a fun story for 3-6-year-olds with gentle advice about not eating too much sugar all at once.

SYDNEY, New South Wales, Australia—MAY 14th, 2024—Australian children’s publishing house, Kangaroo Cove, today announced the launch of its latest book, “A Sweet Surprise,” from author Brittany Smith. The children’s picture book tells kids that having too much sugar may not be as fun as it seems. Releasing June 11th, 2024.

“A Sweet Surprise” tells the story of a little boy, Sam, who cannot stop eating candy. He obsesses and wishes that he could have sugar every day. Sam, with eyes bigger than his head, finds himself unable to stop. He eats all the candy in the candy store. Through a journey filled with jingles and fun hiding spots, readers discover just how much Sam loves sugar. Along his journey, Sam comes to the realization that one piece of candy is better than eating too much.

” ‘A Sweet Surprise’ is a colourful story and a vibrant book,” said author Brittany Smith. “I know firsthand the effects of consuming too much sugar, and I’m certain everyone can recall a time when they ate an extreme amount. The initial burst of energy is often followed by a big crash. While balancing my role as a pastry chef with my own sugar intake, I saw the importance of offering children an enjoyable way to grasp the concept that candy isn’t always as enjoyable as it appears, emphasizing the importance of moderation.”
