PRESS RELEASE: ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY FIGHTS FOR LIVE ANIMAL EXPORT BAN TO BE UPHELD

The Animal Justice Party continues its unwavering position that the export of all live animals should be illegal. We fight to ensure that current laws to ban live sheep exports are permanently upheld and expanded to include all live animals from this barbaric practice.

Despite 75% of Australians being against the exporting of live animals (RSPCA) the Coalition has been transparent about its intent to overturn laws passed by the Albanese government that would phase-out live sheep exports by 1 May 2028, if it’s elected into power at this federal election.

The transportation of animals via long distances across sea and air has been resoundingly declared by scientists and other animal welfare experts as demonstrably cruel, exposing animals, such as sheep, cattle, goats, buffalo and crayfish, to high mortality rates and a multitude of stressors, such as high-stocking densities, changes in climate, infections, stress-induced stillbirths, inadequate access to food and water, injuries from shipping movement and inhumane conditions at the animals’ destination.

Australia is one of the world’s largest exporters of live animals. Last year alone, according to Department of Agriculture statistics, 1,289,074 live animals were exported by sea and air to other countries.

Nations such New Zealand and the United Kingdom have already outlawed live animal exports and the AJP believes that Australia must join this important shift towards a more humane world.

Quotes attributable to Michael Anagno, Lead Senate Candidate – WA Animal Justice Party:

“The Australian public has made its feelings clear time and time again – the majority want live animal export to end. We look forward to the legislated ban on live sheep export being implemented, and we want all industries that export live animals to be provided assistance in transitioning away from this unnecessarily cruel practice.”

About Animal Justice Party

View Website

The Animal Justice Party is Australia's only political party dedicated to protecting all animals. The Animal Justice Party (AJP) was formed in response to the growing number of Australians who feel strongly that much more needs to be done through the parliamentary system to assist the wellbeing of animals. The AJP believes there is a need for laws that recognise animals’ needs, capabilities and interests - whether that's farm animals, our native wildlife or beloved pets. As a political party, our role is to run in council, state and federal elections and to ensure laws are created and enforced to achieve genuine justice for animals. With three state Members of Parliament elected, the Party is already taking huge steps forward for animals - holding the government to account, and introducing bills and motions to end animal cruelty.
