PRESS RELEASE: ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY FIGHTS TO FIX BROKEN TAX SYSTEM

The Animal Justice Party is taking a number of tax reform policies to this federal election. These policies cut straight to the heart of the problems that have seen a rise in cost-of-living pressures, homelessness and environmental degradation.
Numerous reports have demonstrated that Australia’s economic systems are deeply unfair and not working for animals, people and our planet. The major parties are content to enact minor economic tweaks that result in no meaningful change, continuing to kowtow to both big businesses and big polluters.
The AJP stands for both lower income taxes and a crackdown on big businesses that slip through the taxation net at a cost of about $24b to Australians annually.
Australia needs to transition to a clean economy and this can be financed by increased taxes on dirty energy. Whilst the major parties continue to allow polluters to pillage our natural resources without passing on this financial windfall to everyday Australians, the AJP proposes greater taxation of resource companies and a further tax on greenhouse gas emissions. The AJP’s policy also includes increased license fees paid by companies who mine resources such as minerals, coal and gas.
Should the Animal Justice Party win representation at the Federal Election, we will advocate for the States to abolish pay roll tax, which makes employing people more expensive. We will also advocate for an end to Stamp Duties; a grossly inefficient tax on trade. These taxes can be much more effectively replaced by a broad-based tax on land, and on land value uplifts brought about by rezoning changes. Alongside a gradual adjustment to capital gains tax and negative gearing, this will shape a tax system that will make secure housing more affordable for Australians.
The AJP tax reform platform supports employment, employees and most Australian businesses, whilst promoting greater fairness and equality. We stand for balancing lower tax on wages and small businesses with increased taxes on big polluters, extractors and monopolists. Our tax reform platform will also making secure housing more affordable for people and their family animals.
Quotes attributable to Helen Jeges, AJP Lead Candidate for the Senate in Victoria:
“One definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again, and expecting different results. Voting for the major parties and expecting change is insane. Vote for change if you want change.”
