PRESS RELEASE: AS SEVEN MORE WOMEN DIE, THE ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY CALLS FOR AN END TO FAMILY VIOLENCE

Advocating for full funding of initiatives to prevent family violence and to support victims are key features of the Animal Justice Party’s platform heading into the 2025 Federal Election. So far in Australia this year, 24 women and five children have been killed in incidents of family violence, with seven women killed during the 2025 federal election campaign alone.
“This should be the number one issue that political parties talk about when they talk about people’s safety” says Vanessa Cullen, Animal Justice Party Board Member. Current governmental funding goes nowhere near far enough and huge gaps in family violence prevention and support services remain, with both major parties placing this ongoing crisis low on their respective campaign agendas. The Coalition’s “safer communities” plan does not even mention this horrific issue.
If elected to parliament, the Animal Justice Party will fight for full funding of the current National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032, with increased funding for prevention programs specifically. The party also proposes an initial $1 billion for emergency and animal friendly short-term accommodation for victims fleeing with their family animals, as well as long-term recovery support.
The Animal Justice Party’s plan goes further than those of the major parties, toward saving lives and helping victims and their children, take their beloved family animals with them when they leave violent situations. During 2024 alone, 101 Australian women and 16 children died as a result of family violence. On average, one woman in Australia is murdered every four days. These statistics cannot be tolerated and ignored. The domestic abuse and murder of women, children and animals MUST END.
