PRESS RELEASE: A Heartfelt Success: York Jewellers’ Mother’s Day Competition More Than Just a Contest

Sydney, NSW [May 27, 2025] – The team at York Jewellers, led by Managing Director Douglas Ely, is still basking in the warm glow of their recently concluded Mother’s Day Colouring-In and Jewellery Design Competition. What began as an initiative to “Inspire Your Child’s Creativity” became an enriching experience, underscoring the company’s commitment to family, community, and the joy of thoughtful gifting.
“We were absolutely ‘chuffed to bits,’ as we said in our initial announcement, by the response to this competition,” shared Douglas Ely. “But the true reward has been witnessing the incredible creativity of the children and the genuine joy it brought to families. For myself and the York Jewellers team, this was far more than a marketing campaign; it was a feel-good story resonating deeply with our core values.”
The competition invited young artists aged 5-15 to design a unique piece of jewellery for their mothers, with the chance to win a $2500 York Jewellers voucher. The journey to selecting a winner was a testament to the team’s collaborative spirit.
“Our judging process was incredibly thorough and democratic,” Ely explained. “Emma from our team did a fantastic job curating the top five entries. From there, our panel of jewellers and store staff engaged in multiple rounds of voting. We even conducted a silent vote when we faced a tie to ensure the utmost fairness. It was a true team effort, and everyone was invested in celebrating the children’s artistic expressions.”
The eventual winner, nine-year-old Albi, captured the judges’ hearts with his imaginative design. His visit to the Warriewood store with his mother, Gemma, to claim the prize became a highlight for the team.
“Meeting Albi and Gemma was a particularly special moment,” Ely reminisced. “Albi arrived with not just his winning drawing, but another beautiful design he had created – a charming touch that truly showcased his passion. His mother was so impressed by his creativity, and it was wonderful to see her excitement as she used the voucher, even adding a little extra to purchase a ring and a pendant. These personal interactions and the happiness we can facilitate make our work so fulfilling.”
The competition’s positive impact has inspired York Jewellers to consider broader outreach. “This initiative genuinely celebrated mothers while highlighting the amazing artistic talent of children in our community,” Ely stated. It created such a memorable, joyous moment for York Jewellers that we’re even exploring sharing this heartwarming story with local magazines. We believe a community engagement and creativity narrative deserves a broader audience.”
Ely concluded, “At York Jewellers, we’ve always believed in celebrating family and the special bond between mothers and their children. This competition was a beautiful embodiment of that belief. Seeing the effort, the love, and the imagination poured into each entry was truly inspiring for all of us. We’re immensely proud of this initiative and grateful to every child and family who participated, making it an unforgettable Mother’s Day event.”
