PRESS RELEASE: NEW RELEASE FROM DEBUT AUTHOR – ALAN ISHERWOOD

Cairns, Queensland, Australia – 10th July 2025 – Bowerbird Publishing’s Crystal Leonardi shares details of the publication of Isherwood’s Australia by Alan Isherwood.
Isherwood’s Australia is an extraordinary exploration of 20th-century Australia through the eyes of Alan Isherwood. Alan intricately weaves together the stories of childhood friends, First Nations leaders, elders, and others, creating a rich tapestry that resonates across generations. This emotionally sophisticated narrative delves into the shared histories and deeply rooted connections that shape both individuals and communities.
The book takes readers on a journey through remote and isolated regions of Australia, from the deserts of Arnhem Land to the lush landscapes of Cape York and Torres Strait. Through vivid storytelling, Isherwood brings these landscapes to life, capturing the challenges, triumphs, and quiet moments that define life in these unique places. The characters—each with their own voice and perspective—reflect the diversity and complexity of Australian society, both past and present.
At its core, Isherwood’s Australia is about the power of storytelling. It shows how tales of personal struggle, triumph, and survival can transcend time, connecting generations and creating a lasting legacy. Whether recounting the wisdom of First Nations elders or the innocence of childhood friendships in 1950’s Australia, this book offers a powerful reminder of the ways in which history, culture, and family intersect to shape who we are.
“I fully endorse this Autobiography for anyone who would like to read and know how to make a positive difference in our world.” Rev. John Woodley, Uniting Church Minister and former Senator.
“I commend this book for its enlightenment and enjoyment. It is an opportunity to expand your perspective on what truly matters in your life’s journey.” Jim Varghese AM, Chairman, The Leadership Company Qld Pty Ltd.
Alan Isherwood is a passionate environmental advocate, educator, and community leader, born in Kew, Victoria, in 1945. His adventurous spirit was sparked by his parents, and it carried him from his childhood in Hawthorn to remote First Nations communities across Australia, including Arnhem Land, the Central Desert, Cape York, and the Torres Strait. He holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Education and spent time teaching on Guadalcanal, enhancing his deep commitment to Indigenous education.
Alan’s journey took him worldwide, visiting his ancestral homes in England and China. Settling on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland in 1989, he became an influential figure in local activism. A former teacher and Liaison Officer for the Australian Democrats, Alan ran for public office and founded the Tablelands Action Alliance (TAA) in 2014, still active today.
A staunch advocate for climate and social justice, Alan has supported movements like #SCHOOLSTRIKE4CLIMATE, STOPADANI, and NOT4SALE. He and his family restored a rainforest property near Mazlin Creek, where Alan hosts eco-tours and enjoys long-distance swimming and organic gardening. His life is enriched by a love for music, from classical to ska, blues, and 1950s rock and roll.
Now, as a grandfather, Alan continues to champion a sustainable future for the planet, blending his love for nature, activism, and community.
