PRESS RELEASE: Professional driving instruction is a valued and proven service

The Australian Driver Trainers Association (ADTA) represents 1,200 driver trainers who support Australians to gain the necessary skills and experience to achieve a driving licence to operate light vehicles, motorcycles and heavy vehicles. Professional driver training offers support services to Australians of all ages seeking to progress through the driver’s licensing system to a successful outcome of gaining, upgrading or maintaining an Australian driver’s (or riders) licence.

Driving and driver’s licencing is a profound and important social and economic outcome for Australia. Individual Australians, and visitors to Australia, have a range of life and work reasons for seeking a driving licence. Each Australian State and Territory regulates and administers its own framework for drivers licencing.

Each State and Territory also regulates a licensing system for driving instructors; and further regulate the conditions of driver instruction working with younger Australians through the state-based systems of working with children checks.

States also maintain complaint receiving processes for instances of wrongdoing or serious misconduct, and ADTA encourages and supports these processes for complaints. Where necessary the regulators can and should investigate complaints and take necessary action where required, up to and including the removal of driver instruction licences from individuals. Criminal allegations amounting to corrupt or predatory behaviour in any aspect of driver instruction require proper and well-resourced responses from police investigations and court proceedings.

ADTA supports these frameworks to create an environment where driver instruction and testing can occur safely and professionally. ADTA members are bound by the Associations Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct sets out the ethical principles and professional standards expected of driving instructors working in the provision of driver training and who are members of ADTA.

“Professional driving instruction is a valued and proven service to help meet the social and economic aspirations that come with obtaining a driver’s licence. ADTA is committed to the safe delivery of quality instruction by ADTA members across Australia.” Heath Ward, ADTA President said.
