PRESS RELEASE: Newcastle solicitor named among nation’s top female rising stars in law

Kayla Nielsen, Associate Solicitor and Criminal Law Team Leader at Conditsis Lawyers’ Newcastle office, has been named a national finalist in the Rising Star of the Year (SME Law) category at the prestigious 2025 Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards.

This marks Kayla’s third national finalist recognition since graduating with First Class Honours in 2023, having previously been named a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Awards for Criminal Law two years running.

The Women in Law Awards is a nationally recognised program that celebrates the achievements of exceptional women across all sectors of the legal profession. Kayla is one of just 10 national finalists in her category and one of only three selected from regional law firms [PP2.1]– a testament to the scale and significance of her contribution.

Her nomination follows an outstanding 12-month period marked by complex case outcomes, team leadership, client advocacy and community impact. In FY2024–25, Kayla was promoted to Associate Solicitor and later appointed Team Leader of the Newcastle Criminal Law team. Over that time, she opened numerous new matters, mentored junior staff and contributed significantly to the firm’s growth in the region.
Among her notable matters, Kayla successfully secured the annulment of a wrongful conviction for a young woman previously denied proper legal advice and mental health considerations. She also played a key role in a complex criminal case that resulted in a trial being vacated pending appeal – a pivotal step in preserving her client’s right to a fair trial.

Outside the courtroom, Kayla continues to demonstrate leadership through education, mentorship and advocacy. In the past year, she has voluntarily delivered presentations to senior high school students, hosted work experience placements, and helped establish the Conditsis Centre for Excellence in Criminal Law – a firm-led initiative advocating for law reform and public awareness.

“This latest recognition is a reflection of Kayla’s exceptional advocacy, leadership and commitment to her clients and colleagues. We wish her all the best at the upcoming award ceremony,” [PP3.1]said Justine Dittel, Associate Director.

Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala event at Crown Melbourne on Thursday, 27 November 2025.
