PRESS RELEASE: Global First: Mosman Park School for Deaf Children Launches Uniform Inspired by the Deaf Flag

Mosman Park, Western Australia – 15 May 2026
Mosman Park School for Deaf Children (MPSDC) is proud to announce the launch of its new school uniform, becoming the first Deaf school in the world to align its uniform with the colours and meaning of the Deaf Flag.
This innovative initiative reflects the school’s unwavering commitment to bilingual-bicultural education, fostering Deaf identity, language, culture and a strong sense of global belonging.
The new uniform incorporates the three colours of the Deaf Flag, each carrying deep cultural and symbolic meaning:
• Turquoise blue represents the Deaf community, sign language, pride and unity
• Yellow symbolises light, knowledge, an enlightened spirit and thriving together
• Dark blue reflects humanity, connection to the earth, and the global Deaf community, including its strong links to the World Federation of the Deaf
Together, these colours represent the richness of human diversity and affirm that Deaf people are an integral part of our shared world.
The Deaf Flag, designed by Arnaud Balard, a French deafblind artist, is a powerful global symbol of identity, visibility and pride. By embedding these colours into the daily lives of students, MPSDC is ensuring that Deaf culture is not only recognised but celebrated.
Central to this commitment is the school’s strong Deaf-led workforce. MPSDC proudly employs the highest number Auslan Language Specialist staff who work alongside teachers in every classroom. These Deaf professionals are not just educators, they are language models, cultural leaders and role models, ensuring students learn about Deaf identity, language and community from Deaf people themselves.
Principal Monique Smith said the uniform represents far more than a visual change.
“This is about identity, belonging and pride. Our students are not just wearing a uniform, they are wearing a message to the world that Deaf people are here, valued, and part of a rich and diverse community.”
She added:
“Equally important is who our students learn from. Our Deaf staff bring lived experience, language and culture into every classroom. Learning about Deaf identity from Deaf adults is essential, it shapes confidence, connection and a strong sense of self.”
Students at MPSDC learn in a bilingual-bicultural environment where Auslan and English are used with the ethos of “All Auslan, All English, All the time.” The new uniform strengthens this philosophy by visually reinforcing Deaf identity and global connection, while the presence of Deaf staff ensures that this identity is authentically lived and experienced every day.
This milestone positions MPSDC as a global leader in Deaf education, demonstrating how schools can embed culture, language and identity into everyday practice in meaningful and visible ways.
