PRESS RELEASE: Castle Grounds Early Learning opens in Halls Head, breathing new life into an iconic local landmark

Castle Grounds Early Learning childcare centre has officially opened in Halls Head, transforming one of Mandurah’s most recognisable local landmarks into a purpose-built early learning environment designed with children’s development and wellbeing at its core. The centre opened in April 2026, marking a new chapter for the much-loved castle site.
Originally known by many locals as the Castle Fun Park, the site has long held a special place in the community. The castle itself was originally built in 1979 and inspired by Bavaria’s Neuschwanstein Castle, before the site later fell into decline and closed in 1999. Today, that same landmark has been thoughtfully reimagined as the centrepiece of a unique childcare setting for a new generation of local families.
Everything at Castle Grounds was designed by the team at IQ Construction with children in mind. Real grass was chosen over artificial turf to support balance, muscle development and body awareness through natural movement. Uneven surfaces and open-ended materials such as rocks, sand and wood chips were intentionally included to encourage creativity, sensory exploration and problem solving. Open space was also preserved throughout the design, giving children the freedom to choose how they play, where they go and how they build confidence.
The result is an environment that feels calm, natural and engaging, while also preserving the charm and history of the original castle. The entrance opens into a truly distinctive playscape, with the restored castle creating a memorable focal point that sets it apart from more conventional early learning environments.
“Castle Grounds was created to give children a unique space that feels inspiring, natural and full of opportunity. It is incredibly rewarding to be part of an iconic local site reimagined into a place where children can imagine other worlds for many years to come,” said Dwayne Ballast, Commercial Sales Director for IQ Construction.
