PRESS RELEASE: INTERVIEWS OFFERED: SEPTEMBER IS ACUPUNCTURE AWARENESS MONTH

Local registered practitioners available for interviews across Australia

AUSTRALIA: Acupuncture Awareness Month is now underway, shining a national spotlight on 5 Things About Acupuncture Most People Get Wrong and helping Australians better understand the nationally regulated health profession behind it.

Presented by Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association Ltd (AACMA), Australia’s largest professional association representing registered acupuncturists and Chinese herbal medicine practitioners, the annual public education campaign aims to address the gap between public perceptions of acupuncture and the professional reality of its practice in Australia.

This year’s campaign explores five common misconceptions:

1. Acupuncture is not real medicine.
2. Acupuncture is simply about needles.
3. Acupuncture is only used for pain.
4. Acupuncture is the same as dry needling.
5. Acupuncture sits outside modern healthcare.

AACMA CEO Paul Stadhams said many Australians remained unaware that Chinese medicine has been a nationally regulated health profession in Australia since 2012.

“Registered acupuncturists must meet national education, clinical training and professional standards, yet acupuncture is still sometimes dismissed as an alternative wellness treatment,” Mr Stadhams said. “Acupuncture Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to address these misconceptions and help Australians better understand the profession, what acupuncture involves and how it may work alongside the healthcare they already receive.”

Throughout September, the five misconceptions are being explored through videos, articles, practitioner insights and educational resources.

AACMA can arrange interviews with registered practitioners in locations across Australia, as well as AACMA spokespeople and Board members.
