PRESS RELEASE: 50th Anniversary of Civil Marriage Celebrants

July 19, 2023 will be the 50th Anniversary of of civil celebrancy in Australia. It is a significant milestone in Australian history as the country celebrates this unique and cherished profession.
The program was established on July 19, 1973, with the appointment of the first civil celebrant, Lois D’Arcy, by Attorney-General, Lionel Murphy. Since then civil celebrants have played an integral role in countless weddings, funerals, namings, and other important life events. This occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey and achievements of civil celebrants in Australia and their dissemination throughout most countries of the western world. At the beginning of the program only 3% of weddings were civil. Now celebrants perform over 80% of all marriages, and probably the same percentage of funerals.
The program has transformed the landscape of ceremonies for non-church people. It has given marrying couples an array of options that aligns with their personal beliefs and values and the needs and desires of the individuals involved.
As Australians commemorate the 50th anniversary of civil celebrants in this country, it is essential to acknowledge the contributions made by these professionals in fostering inclusivity and diversity within our society.
Celebrant associations are organising a series of events and initiatives close to the 19 July anniversary. These celebrations will not only honour the achievements of civil celebrants but also provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the advantages for them by this profession and the celebrant role in non-religious culture in Australia.
