PRESS RELEASE: A YOUNG FAMILY’S CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN FOR THEIR RACE AGAINST TIME TO SAVE THEIR DAUGHTER
A Victorian family are crowdfunding to save their 2 year old daughter after being diagnosed with Batten’s Disease.
The Hunter family, with 3 beautiful chidren, are raising funds to re-locate overseas to Canada following their daughter Isla’s diagnosis of Batten’s disease after being rejected for support and help from the Australian government.
Batten’s Disease, also known as childhood amnesia, is a sudden onset disease of young toddlers who, after hitting their milestones of learning to walk, speak and perform simple tasks find themselves unable to.
“This disorder will cause Isla to struggle with developmental delay, speech impairment, painful seizures, vision impairment and loss, problems with thinking, movement and balance”, says Nikita Hunter, Isla’s mother. “It also means Isla will always require around the clock care, and eventually, palliative care, and there is no cure.”
After being rejected by the government for support and assistance, a clinical trial based in Canada has shown promising signs of halting the effects of Batten’s Disease.
The Hunter family have raised $40,000 so far in their mission to relocate and cover the costs for the medical trial and expenses, which will take up to 3 years to complete: mycause.com.au/islasbattle.
The family’s goal is to raise $500,000 which will cover all the costs.
“Her name will be her legacy not this disease.” continues Ms Hunter. “We can appreciate it’s a lot of money, but anything you can give would help us enormously in continuing that legacy for her.”
