PRESS RELEASE: ABANDONED SHARE BIKES BEING TAKEN OFF STREETS
Abandoned OnYahBikes are being recovered and recycled through a positive solution developed by City of Sydney Council, an alliance of Sydney share scheme operators, and Revolve ReCYCLING.
Following discussions between share businesses, Council and Revolve ReCYCLING, the following has now been rolled out:
● All share scheme operators – Beam, HelloRide, Lime, Neuron, Airbike and Bird – collect the approximately 300 abandoned OnYahBikes from the Sydney Metropolitan Area as part of their regular service operations;
● The recovered units are delivered to and aggregated at Revolve ReCYCLING, Australia’s leading initiative for the recovery, recycling and redeployment of used/unwanted bicycles;
● Revolve ReCYCLING triages all units and ensures that they are either recycled into new material or redeployed as alternative Personal Transport Vehicles, and;
● Revolve ReCYCLING is continuing to liaise with OnYahBike’s liquidator to have access to appropriate tools and to identify new uses for 1300 units remaining in storage.
Fiona Campbell, Manager Cycling Strategy of City of Sydney Council, who initiated the solution, said: “This is a good result. Through collaboration and responsibility by share operators, ourselves and Revolve ReCYCLING, all abandoned OnYahBikes will be taken off the streets of the City of Sydney and diverted from landfill waste. While OnYahBike failed, the overall sector has done the right thing here and Revolve ReCYCLING has further stepped up.”
Guido Verbist, Revolve ReCYCLING’s General Manager, said: “No OnYahBike will go to the tip. We have the systems in place to recover the metal and other componentry. We have opportunities to use some units in different settings like parks and campuses. It’s been good to support the sector in taking responsibility.”
Looking forward, the share scheme sector also committed to upgrading its industry-wide voluntary commitments to ensure that responsibility is taken for distributed units.
The OnYahBike clean-up solution is expected to be completed by mid-February.
