PRESS RELEASE: Alcohol Use Disorder in Women increases by 80%

Alcohol Use Disorder in women has increased by 80% in last 30 years

Alcohol use disorder is described as consuming more than 14 units of alcohol per week. Research now shows that alcohol use disorder in women has increased by 80% in the last 30 years. This shocking statistic doesn’t surprise Grey Area Drinking Coach Sarah Rusbatch who works with women daily to change their drinking habits. “The women I work with don’t describe themselves as alcoholics but they do have a problem with alcohol, and the key factors driving them to drink are boredom, stress and loneliness.” As alcohol has recently been linked to over 60 diseases, 30 of which have never before been linked to alcohol, and is listed as the direct cause of 20% of all breast cancer diagnoses in Australia, is it time we finally address this issue with the seriousness it deserves?
