PRESS RELEASE: ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY PROPOSES MULTI-FACETED ACTION STRATEGY IN RESPONSE TO ESCALATING GLOBAL CLIMATE THREAT

Australia is facing severe and rapidly escalating impacts from the climate emergency and the Animal Justice Party (AJP) takes this threat seriously, running in this federal election on a climate platform that demonstrates the necessary response to this global crisis. We are committed to climate and ecological rescue.
Current temperatures are killing animals, people and ecosystems, as increased incidences of fires, floods, extreme heat waves, coastal erosion and habitat loss are destroying homes, displacing communities, pressuring public infrastructure and leaving many Australians vulnerable.
The AJP is advocating to end environmentally destructive industries, such as fossil fuel extraction and exports, and to end government subsidies that support these industries. If elected into federal parliament, we will support all workers in these industries to re-train and move into new secure jobs, and we will push for the redirection of funds towards initiatives that restore ecosystems and protect species.
The AJP recognises the need to rapidly transition to a 100% clean energy economy and will push for the introduction of carbon pricing for all industries and for provision of incentives for the transition. Perhaps most controversially, the AJP will propose ending the Carbon and Biodiversity Offset Schemes. It is our position that these schemes are proving ineffective and susceptible to speculation and fraud.
The AJP also proposes that Australia invest in a National Biodiversity Fund that will support the restoration of Australian ecosystems and biodiversity over the next 30 years, protecting endangered species, ending deforestation and habitat destruction, and supporting sustainable practices.
The AJP will fight to establish a Rights of Nature Process that will enable communities to establish rights for ecologically and socially significant natural systems like The Barka and The Great Barrier Reef. The “Rights of Nature” concept recognises the inherent rights of natural systems to exist and would offer these natural systems significant protections through enforceable legal frameworks.
Animal Justice Party candidate for Cunningham, Tim Lavers had this to say “The AJP is proud to be the strongest party on climate. We will put an end to fraudulent and ineffective carbon offset schemes, create a National Biodiversity Fund, and establish a Rights of Nature process.”
