PRESS RELEASE: Australian u17 team win International Football Tournament in Germany
Football Development Australia’s Youth Academy teams have travelled to Germany for many years to test themselves against some of the top youth players and teams in world football.
April saw their current u17 squad travel to the stunning city of Dresden in East Germany to take part in the German Football Festival International Tournament.
Teams travelled from all over Germany, and Europe to take part and the boys negotiated the round robin phase of the competition, playing some progressive, attacking football and defeating teams from Hamburg, Augsburg, Berlin and Denmark.
Then came the nail-biting semi-final on Day 2 of the tournament against the local favourites FC Gleichen. The boys prevailed and went through to the final via a penalty shoot-out.
A tense final against SG Wandlitz was unlocked by two brilliant team goals from the Football Development Australia u17 team with the game finishing 2 – 0 to the “grün-weiß” from Down Under!
The team’s football, tenacity and culture were appreciated by all, and the boys received a rapturous ovation from parents, players and supporter for a trophy lift they will never forget.
Head Coach, Cormac Begley commented on the experience for the Sydney based players and team: “It’s very special to come to Europe and Germany to play in an international tournament. For the boys to win, and gain the respect of players, coaches and teams from all over Europe is very special. It was a wonderful experience from start to finish, and we made lots of new football friends along the way!”
