Analysis of 1,367 residential gas plans on the NEM in Australia in April 2024 reveals that Brisbane has the most expensive gas, costing an average of 6.03 cents per MJ (70% higher than average of other cities analysed).
BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – 25 APRIL 2024: Brisbane has the most expensive residential gas, according to a new study by Energyse.
The analysis also found that Melbourne is the city with the highest average gas spend, at $1,941 per year for 2 person households.

This analysis involved Energyse analysing 1,367 residential gas plans on offer in the region covered by the National Electricity Market (NEM) in Australia in April 2024. Factors such as daily supply charges and usage rates were analysed.
Highest gas rates: Brisbane has the most expensive gas, at an average cost of 6.03 cents per MJ (70% higher than average of other cities analysed).
Highest spend per household: Households in Melbourne spend the most on gas, with an estimated average annual bill of $1,941 for 2 person households.
Lowest gas rates: Albury has the cheapest gas, at an average cost of 2.71 cents per MJ.
Highest daily supply charges: The Gold Coast has the highest daily supply charges, at an average of 112.4 cents per day (42% higher than the average of the other cities analysed).
Lowest daily supply charges: Sydney and Wollongong have the lowest daily supply charges, at an average of 62.6 cents per day.
Least competitive gas market: Albury has the least competitive gas market, with only 4 retailers offering plans.
Most competitive gas market: Victoria has the most competitive gas market, with over 14 gas retailers offering plans in most cities.
“Gas rates continue to show significant disparities across our regions. Average gas prices in Brisbane are 70% higher than the other cities analysed in this report. Gas prices in Adelaide are also high, with households spending more on average than Sydney households, despite consuming less gas,” Energyse founder Louis Fredheim said.
