PRESS RELEASE: Canada’s New Alcohol Guidelines drop to 2 Units per week – might Australia follow suit?

Canada’s new Alcohol Government Guidelines drop to no more than 2 Alcoholic drinks per week – might we see the same in Australia?

Last week Canada announced a dramatic shift in their Alcohol Guidelines, dropping from the previous recommendation of 15 units a week to just 2 a week. This controversial decision has caused intense debate across the globe but Australia’s Grey Area Drinking Coach Sarah Rusbatch welcomes the new guidelines. “Canada has finally come out and said what those of us in the Alcohol free world have known for some time – there is no safe amount of alcohol. We have scientific information available to us now that clearly states alcohol causes 7 types of cancer and plays a major role in heart disease and stroke as well as mental health conditions. This isn’t about prohibition or making alcohol illegal but it is about providing informed, responsible, science based recommendations on what alcohol actually does to the human body”. Whether or not we see Australia follow suit any time soon remains to be seen, but it certainly poses the question, is alcohol going in the same direction as tobacco did 20 years ago?
