PRESS RELEASE: Ceramics Studios Open Around Australia To Share The Wonder Of Clay

MEDIA RELEASE
29 September 2025

Australian Ceramics Open Studios
Saturday 8 + Sunday 9 November 2025

Making with clay is part of the human story from ancient times. But it doesn’t live in history! Ceramic practice is continuous in every culture all over the world. And it’s thriving in Australia right now. More people are taking pottery classes, restaurants are using locally made tableware, galleries are showing ceramic art and artists’ markets are brimming with colourful and quirky ceramic creations.

Over one weekend in November, ceramic artists and studios around Australia will welcome everyone from curious neighbours to collectors! City warehouses, suburban garages, farm sheds and everything in between may offer demonstrations, work for sale, great conversation and warm hospitality. Some studios get together and make their own local trail for you to follow. Some host hands-on workshops, studio tours – even kiln firings!

‘Visitors are looking for a hidden experience.’

‘We held mini workshops, plus had studio members on the wheels so visitors could watch.’

‘Visitors were interested to see photographs of my kiln and hear about how the work is woodfired’.

‘I was handbuilding a large piece during the weekend.’

These artists are all members of The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA). https://australianceramics.com/
In its 70th year, TACA is a not-for-profit, grassroots organisation that seeks to elevate ceramics in Australian culture. It has published The Journal of Australian Ceramics for over 60 years, and provides opportunities for members to promote their work, educate themselves, and connect with the lively ceramics community around Australia. For potters and ceramic artists, connection with clay runs deep, and many spend a lifetime unravelling its mysteries.

Come and meet them! Get a glimpse of their daily practice and take home a unique, handmade piece with a story to share. It’s a special opportunity to chat with the maker and learn more about the material and skill involved in this ancient craft.

‘I often find I have more authentic exchanges with people who have taken the time to come and visit me. They ask all sorts of questions that you wouldn’t normally get in a chance encounter in somewhere like a market. I have gotten to know a lot of my local community, neighbours that had no idea that I was here with my studio and arts practice before they saw the sign and came to visit.’
