PRESS RELEASE: Don’t stop the music: Online music lesson strikes a chord with kids

Julia Rennick released an online music lesson subscription on Patreon for young children

Children across Australia have become the masters of online learning and it sounds like some online lessons are here to stay.

Accomplished music educator Julia Rennick launched her online music lesson subscription on the membership platform Patreon in May, with the aim to share the joy of music and educate young children. Rennick’s Jingle, Jazz and Julia classes have two subscription tiers available, the first of which is targeted at families to use at home, while the second is designed for educators in pre-schools, early primary, and day-care organisations.

The Jingle, Jazz and Julia lessons were developed by Rennick as a way to expand her services to a wider audience to share the benefits of music education for young children. Each video in the Educator Tier is accompanied by a lesson plan, suggested required resources, and scored music and lyrics for original songs.

“Initially, I’m offering these recorded classes for 3-5-year olds. Your younger children may of course enjoy these too. The benefit of online recordings is that your child can watch them more than once, and we know that young children love repetition,” said Julia Rennick, who was nominated as ARIA Music Teacher of the Year in 2019.

“Each class incorporates musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and pitch which the children will learn in a play-based, fun and developmentally-appropriate way. Nursery rhymes are included as they’re an integral part of most young children’s language and literacy experiences. They often provide the child with their first encounter of rhyming patterns in text.

“I’d suggest that you watch and participate the first time with your child/children, and then if you’re happy with the content let them watch again on their own.”

A 2011 study showed that musically trained children have better reading comprehension skills, and a 2014 study found that three- and four-year-old children who could keep a steady musical beat were more ‘reading ready at the age of five, than children who could not keep a beat.

The ‘Children and their Grown-Ups’ is the first subscription tier on offer, available at $15 a month while the more in-depth ‘Education Tier’ is priced at $50 a month. The subscriptions are accessible at https://www.patreon.com/JingleJazzJulia.
