Dr Gabrielle Caswell named finalist for three AusSpace 24, Australian Space Awards.

Moree NSW 20th May 2024: Finalists for the Australian Space Awards AusSpace24 have been announced. The awards recognise the nation’s top space industry professionals and businesses. Dr Gabrielle Caswell has been named as a finalist in three categories: Female Space Leader of the Year – Enterprise, Mentor of the Year and Innovator of the Year.

Dr Caswell is Director of Space Port Australia (www.spaceportaustrlia.com.au) an independent research hub created by Dr Caswell to engage Australian practitioner-scholars, with their wealth of remote medical knowledge, to increase their contribution to space medicine. Space Port Australia has created independent pathways for individuals who wish to work in space to be able to engage commercially, academically and educationally. Dr Caswell Director of Space Port Australia says, ‘There is such a high caliber of individuals contributing to the Australian space effort, that just to be included in the same categories as these individuals is a fabulous win for independent researchers”.

The Artemis III launch is scheduled for September 2026. Dr Caswell said, ‘Commercial space exploration is literally right around the corner. Australians have a culture of novel problem solving and in my view this is a strength for space exploration”. To meet its aim, Space Port Australia has created a number of commercial and educational alliances within the Global South, EU and USA resident companies and organisations. Dr Caswell’s research interests include space health, human factors and molecular and cellular biochemistry in microgravity.

Space Port Australia is a full member of the Global Space Port Alliance; in the coming year Dr Caswell will contribute to a number of panels creating training standards for commercial astronauts and future space workforce selection and training. She added, “The AusSpace24 Awards is a very exciting event, which will hopefully help grow interest in all aspects of human factors and space health, as I am often reminding people, you get them up there, we keep them alive. There are no humans in space without space health and human factors”.

The AusSpace24 Awards will be held on Tuesday 28th of May, 2024 at the Australian Space Summit, ICC, Sydney Australia.
