PRESS RELEASE: Ex ‘Gangster’ on the write path

Self-confessed retired gangster Phillip Player has told many a tall tale in his time, some of them true, most of them entertaining. The former Sydney underworld boss is no stranger to seeing his work in print either, having famously edited jail magazine Rogues during a stint in Long Bay when judges, magistrates and politicians were on the magazine’s reading list.
Now he has published his first book. However, unlike most other crooks, it is not glorifying his own past. He became fascinated by a manuscript he discovered which had been partly-written by his late mum, the theatrical actress Cynthia Ross, and adopting her love of the early days of the outback, Player has completed it as a story of “betrayal, survival and mateship”. Having been brought up in boys’ homes before turning to a life of crime as a “criminal of honour”, they are traits Player knows well.
“The Matilda Man” by the former comedian and actor, ring announcer, restaurateur and nightclub owner is available at all good online stores.
