PRESS RELEASE: Exciting Avon Descent Set to Thrill and Inspire!
The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) and the Northam Avon Descent Association (NADA) are thrilled to announce their collaboration for the upcoming Avon Descent weekend. This continuation of partnership aims to bring the community closer to the water through a series of engaging events and activities.
NADA, the esteemed organiser of the Avon Descent event, will once again host this thrilling attraction, drawing participants and spectators from across the Region. The EMRC will provide invaluable support, as well as major supporter Lotterywest, to the three local governments; Shire of Northam, City of Swan, and City of Bayswater, who are hosting Festivals along the race route. This year’s festivities promise to be more exciting than ever, with a focus on community engagement and water-based activities.
The Avon Descent competitors will challenge both the Avon and Swan Rivers in a variety of paddle and power craft in an exciting two-day 124km challenge (9-10 August), and the festival weekend will include a whole selection of shorter events to suit all levels of experience and ability.
The Shire of Northam’s Bilya Festival will start off the weekend of events, Friday afternoon 8 August, offering a unique and exhilarating Carnival with a special appearance showcasing both power dinghy and mini jet boats on the water. On Sunday 10th August the City of Swan’s Avon Descent Festival and the City of Bayswater Finish Line Festival will wrap up the weekend festivities, this year featuring short paddle courses running between Riverside Gardens and Middle Swan Reserve offering 5km,17km and 30km alternative options for families and anyone looking to give paddling a try.
In addition, there will be a variety of craft to view on the water including surf skis, paddle boards, outriggers, dragon boats and more. These events are designed to foster a sense of community and celebrate the natural beauty of the Swan and Avon Rivers.
The EMRC CEO Matthew MacPherson said, ‘Collaboration is the cornerstone of our success. For over a decade, our community Festivals have thrived, celebrating the unique event of the Avon Descent, showcasing the incredible power of working together. These events are a testament to the strength and unity of our community and event partners.”
The EMRC, Shire of Northam, City of Swan, City of Bayswater, and NADA are committed to creating an unforgettable weekend that not only highlights the excitement of the Avon Descent race but also brings people together to enjoy and appreciate the water.
NADA Board Chair Greg Kaeding said “We are thrilled to host the 2025 Avon Descent, an event that exemplifies the spirit of our community. Working alongside such supportive Councils has been an invaluable experience. Together, we continue to create an iconic event that brings everyone together to celebrate our shared passion and dedication.”
Come together with your community and make unforgettable memories at this year’s Avon Descent and Festivals. We invite everyone to join us for this special event and be part of a memorable celebration.
