PRESS RELEASE: ‘Father Bob Maguire’ tribute song released by “The Voice Australia” contestant Connor Wink

A special tribute song to well-loved Catholic priest Father Bob Maguire has been released by Newcastle blind vocalist /guitarist Connor Wink.

Talented Victorian-based songwriter Dawn O’Connell composed the tribute song called “Father Bob Maguire” after learning of the sad news that Father Bob had passed away aged 88 in April 2023. Dawn was approached with the song idea by a well-known Newcastle charity fundraiser and entertainer Phil Mahoney (who was inducted as Freeman of the City of Newcastle in 2022).

The tribute song focuses on Father Bob’s social justice advocacy and care for the disadvantaged members of society over his many decades of service to the community.

After learning of Dawn’s song lyrics, Channel 9 “The Voice” contestant Connor Wink was asked and privileged to record the song with local producer Luke Wheeldon.

audition on the 2022 series blind audition episode of the Australian singing competition television series, The Voice Australia’ where his audition song, ‘Believe’ by Cher, has had over 10 million views
across social platforms thus far.

When Connor was two years old, he played songs he had heard and liked on his toy piano. His parents realised that the ability to play by ear was a great gift and encouraged his playing. Later, when he was six, they set out to find a piano teacher to work with him. By the time he stopped classical training, he had reached Grade 3. During this time, Connor transitioned successfully to singing due to his ability to memorise lyrics and music combined with his unique voice, acute hearing and pitch. Connor dabbled with the guitar, but later, he discovered the ukulele. He had found his place as an artist. His biggest musical influences have been the Bee Gees and Cher. He was fortunate to meet Cher backstage in Las Vegas in 2010, and she was gracious enough to listen to him sing. Cher also gave Connor some advice that assisted him with his audition for the performing arts high school from which he has now graduated. Connor got to meet Cher again backstage at Newcastle Entertainment Centre in 2018. Connor has also been fortunate to meet many other great solo artists, including Marcia Hines, John Paul Young, Glenn Shorrock and Rick Price, and the latter three Connor has performed for. Connor has been blessed with the presence of many amazing people in his life as well as the support of his local community. Connor has an extensive range of Artists he covers, such as: Bee Gees, Alison Moyet, Elvis, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, John Paul Young, Rick Price, Eva Cassidy, Crowded House, Bruno Mars, Cliff Richard, INXS and many more.
