PRESS RELEASE: Federal Election 2025: Building a sustainable and resilient health workforce

The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association Limited (AHHA Ltd) is urging all political parties to prioritise investment in a sustainable and resilient health workforce this Federal Election —one that is equipped to deliver person-centred care that meets the needs of Australia’s growing and ageing population.

‘The flexibility and responsiveness of the health workforce is being tested like never before, exposing structural and systemic weaknesses in how it is organised and supported,’ says AHHA Ltd CEO Kylie Woolcock.

‘Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated, whole-of-government approach that builds on existing workforce reviews and drives intersectoral solutions that look beyond workforce silos to ensure long-term sustainability.’

AHHA Ltd’s 2025 Federal Election Statement highlights key commitments needed to support and strengthen the health workforce, including:

A coordinated whole-of-workforce strategy that integrates recommendations from existing workforce reviews and ensures intersectoral collaboration for sustainability and resilience.

Building workforce capability to measure the outcomes that matter to people and communities, aligning with the government’s commitment to Australia’s wellbeing framework.

Enabling regional accountability and authority to drive meaningful changes to care pathways, with incentives for improving health outcomes that matter to people and communities.

‘To secure the future of Australia’s healthcare system, we must move beyond short-term, single-sector fixes and invest in a workforce that is adaptable, well-supported, and empowered to deliver high-quality care,’ Ms Woolcock continued.

AHHA Ltd calls for all parties to commit to a comprehensive workforce strategy that supports those on the frontline of care by aligning all parts of our healthcare system to ensure better experiences and outcomes for the health workforce and the public alike.
