PRESS RELEASE: Genre-bending album of the year by Toby Mobbs, recorded with rotary phones

Sequels are a tricky business, but there’s no denying that the second album by Toby Mobbs, ‘In Between The Words’, is different in every way that is good. The rock is heavier, the pop is sweeter, the production is solid, and the writing is strong. You almost wouldn’t notice that half of it is recorded with modified vintage rotary phones.

“Old rotary phones have a unique lo-fi sound to them that I wanted on the heavier tracks of this album. So began the process of tracking down twenty-four different colours, modifying them into working microphones, and putting them to use in the studio.”

A wide variety of genres seems to now be an artistic mark for Mobbs, yet none of it feels out of place. From the 90s rock throwback of ‘Run Back To You’, the balanced softness of ‘Same’, the anthemic rise of the first single ‘Coming Back To Me’, to what can only be described as a night at the opera with the final track ‘Surrender’, ‘In Between The Words’ showcases what Mobbs’ can bring to the table in the indie landscape.

Mobbs is a pop-folk singer-songwriter from Albury, NSW. As a solo act, Mobbs is limited to his guitar and his voice, but it’s his recorded work that allows him to break out of the singer-songwriter style. In a time where independent releases can fly under the radar, this isn’t one to sleep on and deserves a listen. Mobbs has also brought a wealth of talent along with him from almost a full orchestra, a wide range of vocalists, and even Gang of Youths’ own drummer, Donnie Borzestowski.

“It’s a surreal feeling having a musician you have respected for so long from a band you admire so much being a part of this album. It was a highlight of the entire project”

Toby is also known for putting everything into his tours. His 2022 national tour to promote his debut album saw him solo drive 14,500km in 28 days to play a show in every Australian state and territory.

“To me, if I call it a national tour, then I can’t skip half the country. As an independent artist it wasn’t an easy undertaking, but it was a goal that I had set and needed to complete”
