Singer-songwriter Hattie Oates continues to emerge as a force to be reckoned with following new single, ‘Used To Be’.
Inspired by the longing to relive past memories, the 17-year-old elected for upbeat pop tones and a faster tempo to embolden listeners, rather than dishearten.
“In a nutshell, this song is about nostalgia. Whether it’s a person, place or time, it’s a memory that is forever repeating itself in your mind, and one you just wish you could go back to,” Hattie said.
“Honestly, it is probably one of the most personal songs I have released yet. Every time I sing it, I’m hit with a highlight reel of the one of the best summers of my life, hence why I want to go back to how it ‘used to be’. But even so, while the core message is a little sad, performing it is liberating.”
‘Used To Be’ employs tones reminiscent of Amy Shark, Mallrat, G Flip and Missy Higgins.
It follows the success of Hattie’s 2020 single, ‘High’, which garnered praise from the music industry and media.
“The two singles are completely different. I love experimenting with new sounds and genres; it’s this approach that is growing me as an artist.”
Hattie recorded the new single at Yap Yap Studios in Sydney, then mastered by Leon Zervos at 301 Studios.

About Hattie Oates: With a soul well beyond her 17 years, Hattie Oates is a hot home-grown Australian music talent. Her sound is as unique as it is strong and memorable; reminiscent of Nora Jones and Amy Winehouse, Hattie’s voice appeals to the core.
“Growing up in rural Australia, where it doesn’t rain for years, when it does it’s a flood that destroys communities… I guess you absorb a lot of heavy emotion from a young age, it does make you incredibly resilient I think,” says Hattie on growing up in country NSW.
Based in Tamworth Australia, Hattie found her dedication and love for music at just 10 years old. This passionate singer-songwriter paved her musical path when she taught herself to play the guitar while watching her older brother. A short time later, she discovered a love for singing; the rest is history.
Gifted with a musical ear, Hattie has an amazing ability to flip cover songs on their head to re-create and make her own. Last year Hattie released a new single called “High” as a follow up to the popular EP Hattie. Listen to Hattie Oates on Spotify.
