Hattie Oates gives full creative reign to the devil on her shoulder in new single, ‘Runaway’.
Channelling a fun villainess persona separate from her own, the song follows the girl that has everyone wrapped around her finger.
“‘Runaway’ is about the freedom of being single and not wanting anything serious. This is a girl wrapped in lies, deceit, selfishness, not caring who she hurts,” said the 18-year-old.
“I love this freedom that comes with songwriting – you don’t always need to pour your heart out on a page and make it relevant to you. Sometimes it’s just about creating a new character and world entirely different from my own, and having some lockdown fun!”
‘Runaway’ is a stark contrast to Hattie’s last single, ‘Waste My Time’, a ballad flooding in raw emotion that landed her in Spotify’s ‘Peaceful Pop’ and ‘Sad Song Club’ playlists.
Sonically, ‘Runaway’ takes inspiration from BANKS and Billie Eilish, but Hattie calls the song itself a bit of a fluke.
“I had just got a new pedal for my Gretsch and I was fiddling and landed on the main riff. I drew off of the ‘smooth operator’ vibes I was getting, and from there I just kind of threw caution to the wind to see where it took us,” she said.
‘Runaway’ was recorded at YAP YAP Studios, Coogee, with Luke Bertoz, and mastered by Ben Feggans at 301 Studios.
“Songwriting is similar to any kind of writing where there is fact and fiction. I’m excited that I’m exploring both.”

ABOUT HATTIE:
Hattie’s voice might not be what you would expect from a Loomberah-based 18-year-old. Powerful, commanding and melancholic, she can have you singing along and then tearing up in the same breath. Taking inspiration from artists like Tones and I, G Flip, Amy Shark and Adele, Hattie has no problem belting out an original or turning a song on its head. It’s what has led to rave reviews from Pitch Perfect’s vocal producer Deke Sharon, and Triple J’s Dave Ruby Howe.
