PRESS RELEASE: How used EV batteries will help Australia achieve net zero

Brisbane, Queensland – 2nd August 2024 – In a first for the industry, My Nu Energy, a Queensland-based company that repurposes EV batteries to provide cost-effective mass energy storage solutions for business and communities, have deployed their first commercial battery in Brisbane.

My Nu Energy exists to drive waste out of the world’s pursuit for renewable energy. In repurposing the remaining life of (or creating a second life for) EV Batteries that are currently either recycled for minerals or abandoned into landfill, My Nu Energy has developed the next generation of sustainable energy storage using repurposed EV batteries.

The My Nu batteries cost up to a third less than alternatives and can be used for a range of purposes: replacing diesel generators, providing grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), or combined with portable solar to provide remote power systems or micro grid applications.

My Nu Energy was founded by (and named after) long-term friends John Myler and Shaun Nugent. Shaun is the owner and CEO of Phronis Consulting, one of Australia’s most successful mid-sized engineering firms specialising in major infrastructure project delivery including power infrastructure, hydrogen production, pumped storage hydro, battery energy storage systems, grid scale solar generation, wind energy, biogas, and biomass.

“Each 20 foot container holds 18 EV batteries, providing 1MWh of storage, with options to connect multiple containers to provide up to 100MWh or more of capacity.” commented Shaun. “They are rapidly deployed, suitable for a range of environments, and provide a fantastic quality power charge and discharge rate.

“In addition to purchase, we also offer a fully-maintained monthly lease option with terms from 1 to 10 years.”

John, an experienced CEO within the Insurance industry, previously leading major insurers RACQ Insurance, Allianz Partners, and Auto&General, was attracted to the concept due to the benefits in supporting Australia’s transition to net zero emissions.

“It takes a huge amount of resources and a toll on the planet to produce each battery. Our goal is to get up to 10 years or more further use from every EV battery, doubling the expected lifespan,” stated John. “The rapid rise in EV car sales will shortly present a new challenge, similar to the disposing of old solar panels. We have already seen end of life or unused EV batteries starting to become an issue in some overseas countries.”

The team have also designed a smaller trailer battery that provides 120KWh of energy storage, enough energy to run the average 3-person house for 6 days. Being so portable, it is perfect for providing power to markets, school fetes, special events or as an emergency backup.
