PRESS RELEASE: Living in My 70s

On Friday, January 24th, members of the iconic Australian band Skyhooks were celebrating the re-issue of their album “Living in the 70’s” entering the Top 10 of the ARIA charts. However, their guitarist, Bob “Bongo” Starkie, checked himself into a hospital due to health concerns.

Unfortunately, the test results revealed that Bob has been diagnosed with aggressive leukemia. As a result, the upcoming “Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie’s Skyhook Shows,” including the two sold-out Sydney “Rock the Harbour” events scheduled for Saturday, February 15th, will be cancelled. For information about postponed dates and ticket refunds, please contact your point of sale.

“This has come as a shock to me and my family. Life has been generous to me up until now, but sometimes you draw the short straw. I apologize for any inconvenience; it stresses me to cancel the shows. I’ve been feeling on top of the world with the addition of Sasha in the band, but the situation makes it impossible for the shows to continue at this time.” – Bongo

When it comes to classic Aussie rock acts, none are more revered than legendary Melbourne ensemble SKYHOOKS. The glam rockers combined melodic guitar riffs and a pub rock sensibility with relatable lyrics addressing drugs, sex and everyday life in a changing Australia throughout the ‘70s. Throw-in flamboyant costumes and frontman Shirley Strachan’s captivating vocals and you have yourself a delectable cocktail of chart-topping singles from a band who did more in seven years than most rock acts achieve in a lifetime. Bob ’Bongo’ Starkie, original guitarist with the band, has assembled a red hot band to perform their classic songs in a personal celebration of the music of Skyhooks. SKYHOOKS helped change the face of rock’n’roll in the 1970s with a string of Number One and Top 10 singles to their credit, as well as two of Australia’s biggest selling albums, ‘Living in the 70s’, and ‘Ego is Not A Dirty Word’.
