The Shute Harbour Marine Terminal rose like a Phoenix from the ashes. Tropical Cyclone Debbie smashed the Whitsundays on the 28th March, 2017 and left behind a $3.5 billion damage bill in its wake. Shute Harbour was badly impacted and the former Marina precinct was unrecognizable. Sadly, 14 lives were lost during this event.
The Commonwealth, State Government, and Whitsunday Regional Council provided funding under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), as part of recovery measures for the region post ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
Whitsunday Regional Council awarded Vassallo Constructions the contract to rebuild the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal. This project spanned 2 years and was valued at $63.5m.
The project was technically complex requiring marine and piling works in some harshest geotechnical conditions possible1. The location within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park only added to the complexity and required the strictest levels of environmental controls. This is the largest infrastructure project completed by the Whitsunday Regional Council.
Since early Dec 2021, several tours and ferry services have begun to use the new marine terminal2. The new seawall has been constructed, with the level of the entire facility and car park raised by an extra metre for greater resilience to storm surge in the future3.
Vic Vassallo, Managing Director of Vassallo Constructions said, “It was a privilege to be chosen to manage the project at Shute Harbour. We know this region has suffered economically during the pandemic, and it’s nice to be an integral part of such an important local community asset.”
Local building materials and local subcontractors were used for this project. Vassallo Constructions’ mantra is to support the local workforce. The Shute Harbour Marine Terminal project employed 470 contractors.
Vassallo Constructions is a proud family-owned company dating back almost 25 years and continues to employ hundreds of locals to complete important civil projects across the Mackay, Isaac, and Whitsunday regions.
