PRESS RELEASE: New Breast Cancer research calls for Policy Reform on Alcohol Advertising
New Breast Cancer research calls for policy change around alcohol marketing to women
This week The Lancet, (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(24)00747-5/fulltext0, one of the most respected medical journals, presented its latest findings on breast cancer, with some worrying predictions. They predict by 2040 that 3 million women a year will be diagnosed with breast cancer, but that this number does not need to be inevitable if changes are made now. One change proposing “policy makers should reject commercial marketing for products that increase the risk of breast cancer, such as alcohol.’
Grey area drinking coach and author of Beyond Booze, How to Create a Life you Love Alcohol Free Sarah Rusbatch whole heartedly agrees. “It’s not a coincidence that alcohol use disorder in women has increased over 80% in the last 30 years, coinciding with the decision by Alcohol brands to begin specifically targeting women. It’s time we make changes to the marketing of alcohol to women and stop promoting it as self-care and a ‘reward’ at the end of a busy day.” She also urges change to happen soon in the lead up to Mother’s Day “everywhere we turn in the lead up to alcohol we see messages, cards, memes and gifts for mums that focus on alcohol as self-care.”
Rusbatch has now supported thousands of women who don’t identify as having severe alcohol use disorder but rather ‘grey area drinkers’; to change their relationship with alcohol and thus reduce the potential future health risks of alcohol/ She does however, acknowledge that it’s not easy for women to change their drinking when they are exposed to the incessant marketing of alcohol directed at them. ‘Policy reform around rejecting the commercial marketing of alcohol will save lives.’ She says.
