PRESS RELEASE: New Telehealth Clinic Set to Improve Access to Travel Doctors in Regional NSW

Glide Online Travel Clinic
Press Release – 4 March 2025
New South Wales, Australia
There’s a real problem of access to doctors in country New South Wales. Only half of travellers to at-risk countries are getting the recommended preventive healthcare they need.
Launched in 2025, Glide Online Travel Clinic is a telehealth travel medicine service dedicated to improving access to high-quality pre-travel healthcare across NSW.
Glide is working with pharmacies from Bondi to Broken Hill to provide immediate access to travel doctors for people anywhere in the state. By seeing a travel doctor, people are not only protecting themselves, they are also protecting their communities at home from communicable diseases like measles.
Number one, it’s accessible. It’s also easy and convenient.
Telehealth consultations with travel doctors enable travellers to obtain:
o A comprehensive pre-travel medical assessment
o Electronic prescriptions for immunisations, anti-malarials and other medications
o Written travel-related medical advice delivered securely to their inbox
o Medical letters for customs officials to cover prescription medications
o Recommendations for pharmacies in their local area
A visit their pharmacy is then all that’s required for:
o Administration of travel vaccinations
o Medication pick-up
o Access to other pre-travel products, like insect repellent, oral-rehydration salt tablets, and other over-the-counter medications.
Glide is an online-only clinic led by Dr James Knox, an Australian Specialist in Infectious Diseases. Dr Knox has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and has worked in areas as diverse as the UK, Sudan and Angola. Doctors live in and work from Queensland, NSW and Victoria and are passionate about supporting people to travel well.
With the recent announcement of pharmacist-delivered travel vaccinations in South Australia, Glide Online Travel Clinic plans to provide services there in the near future. The expansion of the service is then anticipated to continue in line with the roll-out of pharmacy-delivered travel vaccinations around the country.
Quote attributable to Jason Harvey, CP Peoples Chemist, Broken Hill: ‘People in the Far West love to travel, but it can often be weeks before you are able to get in and see a GP to access the medications you might need. Access to fast and efficient telehealth is an easy way to help us visit the rest of the world.’
Quote attributable to Dr Knox: ‘The government’s recent commitment to increasing Medicare funding should be applauded. We encourage them not to overlook innovative solutions, including selected telehealth-only services. High-quality telehealth-only services should be part of the solution to the problem of healthcare access in regional areas.’
