PRESS RELEASE: Professor Munjed Al Muderis Helps Amputee Golfer back onto the Fairways.

Eighteen months post-Osseointegration, amputee golfer can compete again in his first tournament.
Bradley Smith’s love for golf started during his teenage years. However, at 22, and with a 9-month-old child, his world shifted when he was diagnosed with bone cancer in his knee. The prognosis was daunting: above-knee amputation and rigorous chemotherapy, with golf seemingly out of reach.
Post-surgery, Bradley grappled with a traditional socket prosthesis. Determined to reclaim his game, he wrestled with restricted movement, pain and discomfort. The socket’s mechanics hindered his swing, pushing him to seek alternatives.
In 2019, Bradley learned about Osseointegration. Within two weeks of consulting with Professor Munjed Al Muderis, Bradley flew to Sydney for osseointegration surgery.
Osseointegration, a revolutionary option for amputees facing challenges with socket fitting or persistent pain, stands at the forefront of innovative orthopedic solutions.
“If I’d been happy in the socket, it would’ve been a very hard decision, but I was so miserable having that socket every day. I’d put it on, I’d be in pain all day and I’d start sweating. I’d come home and I’d take my leg off and I’d throw it against the wall. I’d had enough with it. So, for me, it’s the best thing I could have done.”
Recovery spanned months, and the biggest test was resisting the urge to rush back to golf. “There are not many surgeons that will do an operation and keep the relationship with their patients but Munjed will do it”.
Eighteen months post-Osseointegration, Bradley could compete again in his first tournament.
He can now focus on his game, matching his pre-amputation performance, with only a 20-yard difference in decreased hitting power.
With Osseointegration he had the opportunity to opt to play golf full time as a career. He is now “happier than he has ever been”, also grateful for the support he had from his wife and his parents.
Beyond personal achievements, Bradley champions disabled golf, aspiring for Paralympic inclusion (being already included in the Olympic games). He envisions motivating fellow amputees toward an active lifestyle.
“I think without golf I’d be in a very different place, that’s for sure. Without it, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I think golf for me is happiness. That’s what it really does mean. Obviously when you play, you’re not always happy because sometimes you don’t play the way you want to. But that’s golf, that’s life, you know, that’s what happens. But yes, I think golf for me is just happiness.”

About Osseointegration International

Osseointegration International designs and markets the Osseointegration Prosthetic Limb System (OPL). The OPL system is made up of multiple components. The core implant is made of high-tensile strength titanium with a highly porous titanium coating, providing both initial stability as well as long-term bone integration (in-growth). The unique properties of the titanium coating allow the bone to grow into the surface of the prosthesis, which makes the bone-implant structure one solid unit.
