PRESS RELEASE: Solar Panels Increase Australian Home Values By 2.5% On Average, New Study Finds

A comprehensive analysis of more than 1,000 Australian property sales reveals that solar panels increase home values by an average of 2.5%, with some markets experiencing premiums exceeding 6%, according to new research from GoSolarQuotes.

The analysis, conducted by GoSolarQuotes using over 1,000 residential property sales from 2025, compared similar single-storey, three-bedroom homes matched by suburb, price range, and sale period to isolate the impact of solar on sale price.

Results showed strong variation between markets. The Gold Coast recorded one of the highest premiums at approximately 6.9%, while other cities such as Sydney and Melbourne saw moderate increases. In contrast, smaller uplifts were observed in Brisbane, Canberra, and Perth.

Across every city analysed, homes with solar sold for more than comparable homes without solar.

The research was led by Bidhan Bhunson Roy, a solar and sustainability researcher with a Master’s in Environmental Science and Management from the University of British Columbia, with analysis overseen and published by GoSolarQuotes.

“What this shows is that solar is no longer just a cost-saving upgrade — it’s becoming a pricing factor in the housing market,” said Ben McInerney, owner of GoSolarQuotes. “In higher-demand markets, buyers are clearly willing to pay more upfront for energy efficiency, while in others the effect is smaller but still consistent.”

The findings suggest that location is a key driver of solar value, with higher electricity costs and stronger buyer demand contributing to larger premiums in certain cities.
The study was based on publicly available property sales data sourced from Domain and analysed to compare matched properties with and without solar systems.
