PRESS RELEASE: Sutherland Shire plumber warns homeowners to watch out for plumbing issues amid heavy rains & flooding

Sydney, 05 April 2022

A veteran Sydney plumber is reminding homeowners to be more vigilant of their plumbing systems, with more wet weather events expected until late autumn.

Peter Byron, company director of MPJ Plumbing Group, noted that the heavy downpour and rising floodwaters in some areas can be a challenge for residential plumbing and drainage systems.

He said: “This wet weather has become a sort of test for how resilient many home plumbing systems are. It’s absolutely vital to be aware of potential issues like leaks, blocked drains, and overflowing sump pumps, and how to manage them.

“Plumbing issues can be triggered or aggravated by this relentless wet weather. Check critical areas that are often unattended. A broken pump can flood your home, and if the area is not dried out properly, it can lead to other problems like moulds and termites.”

According to Byron, one way to prepare the home for heavy rain is to make sure the gutter is clean and clear, particularly of rainwater. Otherwise, it can cause flooding and damage the wall cladding. The water can also seep through to the tiles which can cause cracks.

If the property has a garden or a yard, it is important to clear tree roots that can block drains. Tree roots enter through cracks and loose joints, and they can grow from the inside, causing stubborn clogs. Overhanging branches can also cause further damage when there are strong winds.

Byron also suggests checking that the main water lines are sealed so they will not be contaminated by rain or flood water.

Once the rain, or flood, has subsided, it is strongly recommended to call a professional plumber to check for damage to pipes, leaks coming from the roof, blocked drains, overflowing drainage, and contaminated water systems, among others.

He added: “While a do-it-yourself fix is always an option, a professional plumber can use specialist tools and equipment to resolve plumbing issues. We know where to look and what to look for, and can offer long-term solutions.”

“Good plumbing is a core pillar of maintaining any property and ensuring it is resilient against any extreme weather condition.”

MPJ Plumbing Group has been in the business for over 25 years, and is well-equipped to handle all kinds of residential plumbing issues, from burst pipes and leaking taps to gas fitting, repairs, and emergency plumbing service, especially this rainy autumn season.
