PRESS RELEASE: Sydney-based AB Electrical reminds residents and business owners to be wet weather-safe

Sydney, 4th of April 2022
AB Electrical & Communications, a Sydney-based electrical services provider, cautioned residents and commercial property owners to practice electrical safety habits, as heavy rainfall continues to batter parts of the country.
Experts forecast that the La Niña weather event will persist until late autumn, two months longer than expected. They have also flagged the possibility of another one emerging next summer.
With multiple severe thunderstorm alerts and flood warnings expected in the weeks ahead, Sydney-based AB Electrical reminds everyone to be more mindful of their electrical setup, to avoid inconvenience or worst, potentially fatal accidents.
Owner Adam Bushell noted that there has been an uptick in rain and flood-related concerns from customers across Sydney.
He said: “Whenever possible, we strongly encourage our customers to proactively check their electrical systems. We know this wet weather is going to be here for a while, so a simple electrical check-up is a good way to start.”
Bushell recommends installing a safety switch. If already installed, it should be tested regularly. A safety switch can protect homeowners from electric shock.
According to NSW data, about 40 percent of house fires in the state are due to electrical faults and appliances. These could have been prevented by a licenced electrician checking electrical wiring and installing safety switches.
Bushell’s other storm and flood safety reminders include:
Brief the adult members of the household on where and how to turn off the power supply in an emergency.
Pack up electric equipment and store or move them to higher ground.
If power is lost, turn off power points and unplug electric equipment.
After the storm or once flooding has subsided, Bushell warns home and property owners to stay away from electrical cables that may have been displaced. If any of the electric-powered appliances were submerged in water, it is safer to dispose of or replace them. If there is a plan to reuse them, have an electrician conduct a safety check.
It is also important to not touch the switchboard if it has been damaged by water. If unsure, it is always best to call a professional.
For business or commercial property owners, Bushell additionally advises checking that generators have the right socket before connecting them.
Bushell added: “Understanding and managing electrical systems can be daunting for a lot of people, which is why we make sure to provide jargon-free explanations and easily actionable instructions to all our clients. It is important to remember that you do not have to wait for a disaster or a problem to call an electrician. Preventive and maintenance services are part of what we do.”
